Homeless, How do towns deal with it?

It seems like most homeless people are doing so by choice. I used to live in Oregon.

Used to have to work in western OR, and just visited some relatives during the holidays. Although maybe not as many encampments as I’ve seen in years past, it’s still disgusting. As we were heading to the airport Monday, we seen a huge plume of smoke up ahead near the freeway. Yep, coming from homeless encampment, on the freeway right of way. And get this, the residents of the 3 or 4 largest liberal metropolitan cities (on the west side) have to pay a 1% HOMELESS Tax.

I live near to Iowa City, Iowa and the homeless, transient population is welcomed. Bus them in from Chicago, build shelters and then pay the police force to handle the numerous altercations that occur between that specific population on a daily basis.

Seattle's latest and greatest the last few years, has been to buy up older hotels to house them in and build the tiny home villages. A couple problems there. These facilities mandate no drugs or alcohol. A recent survey showed nearly 70% of the homeless population are drug addicts or alcoholics. So these people don't want anything to do with the rules of these facilities and will not go. They choose they're lifestyle of crime and drug addiction. I seen now where Seattle has spent well over a billion dollars on the homeless crises in the last 10 or 15 years (can't remember which) and in that time the homeless population has increased 10 fold. Nice work.

COVID seemed to expedite the problem. There were always homeless people, but there weren't giant camps and panhandlers like there is today. At least nowhere I've lived.

Denver? It’s all whites. Vancouver BC mostly whites and natives, along with a couple Filipinos. If you look at the demographics of Vancouver these days, there is a shortage of white people, yet they make up the largest percent of the “drug addicts living outdoors”


Vancouver is Chinese, and Indian, Indians from India, yet you would be hard pressed to find one of those ethnic groups hunched over in a stooper out of their minds.

The solution is simple, yet complex to this madness, but our country is set up to block it from happening.

This is in a Arkansas town population 24,000. The guy and his dog have set up camp for 4 days now a block from my office. This is at a major intersection in the middle of town. How do other town deal with these issues?

This city I work in enables the behavior. It is a huge industry for “non profits” to “support” the drug addicts. The last fiscal year the city spent nearly $750 million dollars on “homeless services”. It’s unreal. Companies get paid huge amounts of money to clean up the messes, the addicts move and create a new mess.

The city raise taxes on law abiding folks, then funnel the money to the non profits.

The criminals trash the city, steal from the stores constantly, break into vehicles, steal catalytic converters, drill holes in your gas tank to steal the gas out of your car etc.

The policies of the city government directly leads to the destruction of businesses, and people’s way of life.

It’s a disaster.

The parts of the city where they let them have free rain look like a cross between the walking dead movie and Mad Max.

If enuff businesses close in an area, the city will enforce the laws, and magically the problem is gone in that specific area.

It is estimated 50 percent of the homeless people in this city moved here directly due to the amount of “free money” they can get, and the lack of law enforcement.

When I cross the county line 15 minutes away where I live they don’t tolerate it, and enforce the laws. It’s like I landed on a different planet. Everything is normal and how you would expect it to be.

But what’s happening is that people and businesses that can afford to leave are leaving. San Francisco, LA, Seattle, Portland, etc.

Once those middle/upper class people, and the businesses that employ them, leave…..they’re not coming back. As the cities settle into financial distress (think Chicago, Baltimore) they start to canibalize the remaining citizens and the decline accelerates.

I think about that a lot. It could be unavoidable or unforeseen circumstances not just bad decisions. Loss of a job and a bad medical diagnosis or a medical condition/injury causing you to not work or earn as you’re accustomed to.

12 years ago we lived in our RV while traveling for a couple of years . I was shocked at how many people lived in their RV out of necessity . People my age , lost their house to heart attack medical bills , loss of job , or just dumb luck .
It happens more than I realized .

What's the solution ? Put them in jail ? How can you force someone NOT to be homeless ? What would the penalty be ?

Yeah, that’s exactly what you do. The vast majority of them have or are committing a crime. I would wager to bet that they are on drugs or have drugs on their person, that they are more than likely in possession of stolen property, or are violating a MC or law by setting up camps in unauthorized places, by littering, or by loitering.

The homeless in the City I work continually leave trash everywhere, destroy public property, and make people feel uncomfortable in the City Parks that are public property paid for and maintained by public tax funds.

In my town homelessness has significantly gotten worse. 20 years ago they were all out of sight. You knew where they lived but they all kept a low profile. Then something changed and the homeless didn’t care about keeping a low profile anymore and they started camping wherever and whenever they wanted. I’m not sure what the answer is either but it’s bad.

Same reason you don't feed stray cats at your house. Many grocery stores have programs in place to donate expired/expiring food to shelters and food banks.

My neighbor feeds alley cats....he doesn't have any mice
