I have hunted Holy Cross Wilderness the past two years in muzzleloader season. Once you are in 2 miles on foot, you won't see many, if any, hunters. At least where I have hunted.

Eric - have you seen good elk numbers during the muzzleloader season? I'm archery only - but sure seems like that would be a prime week to have a firearm in hand...

There are not as many elk in 45 as other units like the Flat Tops. I think because there are not as many big meadows. It is generally steep and timbered until treeline. They are certainly there though. In muzzy season I see them right at timberline. I think many hunters are down too low that early. I come from the east. Happy to tell you a bit more via PM. Access is not a problem. You can drive a passenger car to most any trailhead.

I've hunted in the HC wilderness accessing it via the west side in unit 444. Would be glad to share more info via a PM. No jeep roads into the area on that side.
