Holy crap powder prices

Yeah… been this way for a while now unfortunately. Best thing is to wait for a sale and stock up. My local scheels has sales on reloading components at least twice a year, so that’s when I’ll usually add to the supply.

Powder and primer prices have actually decreased some lately.

But yeah, it still sucks!

Last major haul on primers was $125/5000 with $25 mail in rebate. The only problem was how many cases could I buy with the wife along. Ended up with 4 cases. One each of large rifle, small rifle, shotgun and a mixed of small and large pistol. This was 2019. Buy powder and primers in volume when prices are right.

I usually wait for Midways birthday pricing to buy a bunch of powder. Shoulda checked my RL23 bottle before it passed, that $300 8 pound keg is getting light.

I make one big purchase a year when there is free hazmat. Started reloading in 2017 and I don’t think I ever saved any money. With prices so high now it does seem to eliminate the hoarders from hoarding.

The funny thing is, I've be reading some American rifleman magazines from the 70's. There's quite a few articles on reduced loads because guys were complaining about the high cost of components then. If them old boys saw what we pay now they'd probably choke...
I was loading back then ;) .
But, it doesn't really bother me, everything has gone up. My first public job paid 1.30/hr., first car was 2800.00.
So, powder ain't that bad.

For years I was after some trail boss.... almost 4 years. I was finally able to grab 3 of the 9oz cans, price was almost double the tag on my last remaining one.
I got lucky to be at the LGS the day the powder shipment arrived.... I grabbed the only 8lb container of Varget that they recieved... after tax it was just short of $450.... ouch. I asked them to put me on the "call list" if they get H4350 in. Luckily that will fill out my needs for a long time, but any new rifle will be sacrificed for powder for the foreseeable future.

After an 8 or so year break from reloading I was shocked and remembered the $15-20 per pound stuff I used to buy ….

There was supply scares for a decade and all the hoarders are already hoarded up! Throw price escalation on top and its hard to go too crazy.

This discussion seems funny to me as powder and primer prices in AK seem to finally have come back to pre-pandemic prices, with sales on several brands at our large box stores. Im stocked up!

Buy cheap and stack it deep!

I’m set for a long time.
