Relatively new hunter here just got back into it after a 20 year long hiatus and hunted D16 in Socal this year.(very tough zone)

This rifle was gifted to me about 20 years ago and is my only "hunting rifle" chambered in a 30-06 i have 3 5 and 10 round magazines for it. Overall this rifle works flawlessly barely kicks for a 30-06 and is an interesting rifle to have around, but I have a few concerns and looking for advice.

Collectors item or practical hunting rifle, given the rarity of the rifle I wonder if it might be best to keep it stored and not knock it around in the woods I am fairly hard on my gear.

Weight, I haven't weighed the rifle yet but its a bear to carry around in the woods compared to what I can imagine a lighter Tikka might be.

Accuracy, my biggest concern here is the proven accuracy of the rifle I am a relatively inexperienced long range shooter(looking to work on that) but now that I'm out west and not in Texas 100 plus yard shots seem to be the norm. Rifle has a 2.5-10x44? Vortex viper on it currently.

Bottom line I'm trying to get an idea on if I should be looking into replacing this rifle with a T3X or similar. I can afford a new rifle weather or not I sell this one.

Bonus question, any ideas how to mount a bipod to this front swivel?1000020576.jpg

I don't know anything about it but it's a sweet looking rifle. It being a HK its probably worth somewhere between a lot and a ton.

If you hunt with it, keep it. If not, sell it unless it has sentimental value to you. It doesn’t look so valuable to me that I would not want to carry it in the woods.

If you post a picture of the sling swivel, I can try to give you a better idea how to mount a bipod on it. My first thought is to consider a Spartan bipod with a Classic Gunsmith mount. But that would require careful installation.

I don’t like Vortex scopes at all, so one thing I would definitely recommend is looking at a Trijicon Accupoint to replace that. Something about that rifle calls out for an Accupoint 1-6x24.

Edit - part of the reason the recoil is manageable is because it is heavy. If it was me, I would look real hard at one of the Sauer 100s or Tikkas on sale at EuroOptic.

I have definitely been looking at those eurooptic tikkas is that price normal or just for blackfriday? What T3X would you recommend as a good base to potentially upgrade later? What happened with vortex optics i feel like when I bought the scope 5 years ago it was well regarded their 40% off discounts also seem to be a good value.

EuroOptic bought a ton of Tikkas and Sauer 100s. They have been clearing them out for the past couple of months.

As for which Tikka to upgrade, get the most basic version in the cartridge you want. I recommend either 1:8” twist .243 or 6.5mm CM. If not planning to upgrade the stock, I am 5’10” 180 and prefer the compact stocks. I also like the stainless versions, but nothing wrong with the blued ones.

As for Vortex, my personal opinion is they have always been garbage. My opinion and $6.00 might get you a cup of coffee. But I think the best value for a reliable scope are the Trijicons and SWFA’s under $1000. Especially with the Black Friday SWFA sale, their 3-9x and 3-15x are great options. And, when they are in stock, the SWFA 6x is my favorite scope.

This rifle is as rare as hen's teeth - they only imported them for about 3 years. You've got about $750 in magazines alone on that table. Rifle's worth about $1600-2000.

It's also one of the very few semi-auto 30-06s out there you can hunt with, and it'll be one of the more accurate of any of them out there. HK's 940 is about the only one you could expect to be more accurate out of the box, generally. But, both of those HK's are heavy, as you mentioned.

If you aren't in love with it, that's okay - there's someone out there who would be, and who would pay plenty for everything you have there. It's a niche market, but it's a market people are accustomed to paying a lot to play in.

There's nothing wrong with selling it, and getting into something you'll love. But for some guys, it may be an ideal deer gun.

Harris made a front bipod mounting adapter for the Remington 7400 type rifle. Maaaaaaaaayyyyybe it would work? Or maybe swap the front screw? Use it as a template to 3d print your own?

As the owner of one vortex bino, one rangefinder, one spotting scope, one red dot, and at least four of their riflescopes…..yeah, I’d swap scopes for a serious use rifle. You can get a Trijicon Huron 3-9 or 3-12 under $500.
