Wanting to try OTC in SE Colorado
Not sure where to start or if its worth trying, any help would be awesome!
It would be DIY and I have not hunted Elk before. More for the experience than anything.

Not sure you are asking for what you really want. Southeast Colorado is mostly private and open country and no mountains to speak of. Also not many elk there. Do you mean the SE part of WESTERN Colorado? West of Trinidad and Pueblo? I have not personally hunted that area but there are certainly elk there and some public land in the mountains to hunt

Try the CPW website, you can look at all sorts of stats to figure out what unit you want to hunt.

136 and 137 are in the plains. There are some canyon and arroyos with some water. There is a checker board of public land in those units. 135 has more public land. There are some elk there, just few and far between. And more likely to be on a private hay field. The area is better for antelope, muleys, and some whitetail. You'd be better off with an OTC tag heading West a couple more hours.

You are better off heading to 80/81. Or 82/86

Where do you live/ where will you be coming from?

South East KS, MO line coming across 400 Hwy,

If I was spending $650 on an elk tag, those areas wouldn't make my top 30 list. If I was spending $46 they wouldn't make it either. But if I lived in that area, I'd sure give it a thorough lookover. I know there's some good bulls south of Kim, but mostly private.

Thanks I appreciate that for sure!

According to the big game brochure 136 and 137 are otc for archery season but not for 2nd and 3rd rifle. They also appear to be 95% private lands. Here is some numbers you can call for the southeast area if you still want to explore that option

Those units are part of the OTC plains rifle tag.

Odds of success are not in your favor for that tag.
