Help me decide on 270 win bullet

Decided that my winter project to tinker with is working up a load for my 270 that was passed down from my grandpa it’s an old husqvarna in a stock my great grandpa made so really just want to use it for sentimental value . I used to hunt with it every year but I started buying other rifles and using them instead. Having trouble picking a bullet to start I’ve narrowed it down to 130 Berger hunter, 140 Berger hunter, and 145 ELD-x.

I want to use this gun for deer and elk next year. Any 3 of these should hold enough velocity to do there job at any range I’m comfortable with shooting. Just wondering if anyone can share there experience with these choices. I already shoot bergers in my 28 Nosler and 6.5 prc so I know how well they work. But after seeing everyone success with eld-x I’m open to those too.

The barrel on this rifle is 21” so it will be shooting a bit slower than a standard length 270

I don’t have input on either of those three bullets. I thought you might be interested to know that I have an 18.5” 270 that pushes the 140 Accubond at 2950fps. I think that’s really respectable and you’d probably 150 to 200fps be over that with 21”.

I’d be really happy with that speed with a 140 grain bullet at that barrel length. What powder and brass combo? I actually had considered an accubond also just hard to go away from bergers with the results I’ve seen the last couple years with them.

I get just shy of 3000fps out of a 22” barrel in my 270Win with 150 grain Partitions. 130, 140, and 150 grain Partitions and Accubonds are very accurate in my rifle.

Good luck.

ELD-X 145 gets a lot of love from 270 and 270 WSM shooters here on the forum for accuracy and terminal performance. And they're half the price of Bergers! I'm working up loads for my WSM using that same bullet and hoping I can find a recipe to be my go-to do (almost) everything load.

I have good success with the 140 CH and the 145 ELDX with H4831sc or RL26. Can get more speed with RL26 but since its pretty hard to find, I just stick with H4831sc. Currently shooting the 140 CH at 3070 with a 24" barrel.

I have used 130 berger vld in 270 with 59 gr h4831sc for deer and antelope and worked great. 3100 fps out of 24” barrel. Very big wounds. No experience on elk but can’t see how it would do one any good wifh a shot in the lungs.

CH? Are you meaning Berger classic hunters?

I shoot 140 Hornady boat tail spire point with IMR 4350 for 40 years and the elk, moose, Mt goats, sheep, bears and deer have never complained. It can shoot the 130 GMX, 140 NAB and 130 TTSX also very well with different powders, but the Hornady's are cheap, work very well and have never let me down.

I also don't shoot past ~350 except the goats and sheep.

Good luck in your choice. The 270 will not let you down if you do your job!

Cheers

Hard to go wrong with the 150 accubond. Higher elevation or fast twist and the 165 accubond gets pretty interesting

Love the 270....

Shot the Berger 210gr VLD in my 300 Win Mag very extensively years ago and largely moved away due to the limitations of the bullet - it does exactly what it says and consistently so which is the most important thing. This allows you to learn the limitations of your combination, i.e. what type of quartering shots you can take and how much penetration you may expect. It requires discipline and potentially results in lost opportunities where it was not up to the shot I was offered.

I still do shoot Berger. But I choose carefully for an application and what I may be presented with. I prefer bonded designs from almost everyone and still lament the passing of the Interbond... but there are others.

For many circumstances I still like North Forks - they are hammers and allow me to take any reasonable angle offered to me. If a NF won't work on a certain angle pretty much nothing will. There are similar designs or equally tough options from other manufacturers.

It also really depends on how far you intend to be shooting - i.e. expected impact velocities at which you require the bullet to perform.

RE26, if you can get it, gives you good velocity. RE22 / Norma MRP is close but check the temp sensitivity. Staball 6.5 has been working pretty well for me for the 130gr. H4350 always shot very well for me and "fast enough" but was not fastest. Some of the VV works well too.
