Help me catch this rat!

Be careful not to let the rat know he's getting to you. When I was in high school we had a pack rat that similarly eluded all attempts to trap him for several weeks. We left for a weeklong vacation and upon return realized the rat had gotten into the fan in the shop freezer, which was full of meat. It was summer and a total loss of all freezer contents. To this day my dad thinks the rat committed suicide as a final act of spite.

I got one I didn't even know I had when he wormed his way into the outside AC unit. We heard the fan puree him from upstairs. Made an awful mess.

2 other options come to mind. i used to shoot groundhogs on farmers place until they got rid of them. they would drive the honey wagon to a hole and empty the liquid down the hole. even if they missed him as he ran out he darn sure moved.

the other is the vacuum pump they used to catch prairie dogs with.

and i would name him Victor!

Assuming that you are dealing with a Bull rat.

I tried to find a decoy for you to deploy, but all I could find was Halloween type figurines. Some of them have merit, so I would suggest that you take a look and see if one of them seems usable for your situation.

I would then implement a scent into your decoy spread. I was unable to find any commercially available rat estrus urine.
However, I did find a good research document on the subject:

Perhaps you could contact a research facility and get some from them. Perhaps you could become part of their research and testing.

I also have no knowledge of the black market availability of rat estrus urine...maybe one of the other Sliders can get you hooked up.

I wasn't going to give away my secrets, I was going to speak of the decoys and the pheromones, but that's the stuff people pay for, no need to be public knowledge.

However the real trick is a bowl full of beer. Once he comes out, has a drink, that fat ass decoy sucks him in everytime. Especially if you have it going away with a look back over its shoulder in the direction he will be.



No way you can't catch with that setup. I have a live catch trap that has the decoy, I'll post pictures later.

Couldn't disagree at all, as you'll note from my participation. I was simply responding to "this needs to stop" with the fact that this thread is AT LEAST as good (if not WAY better) than many--as aptly noted by several who apparently thought I actually gave a damn with my comment above. Just get to Glacier Natl Park quick if you wanna see em cuz this thread will melt em for sure!

Saw this at a pest control expo in Vegas last year. I’ve never used it as I prefer to have the actual animal (dead or alive) rather than guessing it “worked” and the animal is actually “dead”. It is Kinda pricey but still cheaper than an expert guide service that specializes in bull rats.
