Help Me Avoid the Mouse! (Disney World)

One of the countless reasons I adore my wife...she believes Disneyland to be Satan's playground, and would rather go hike somewhere with the kiddo strapped to her back for free.

Sounds like you're going to Disneyland amigo, and you didn't even get to win the Superbowl first 🤣

Disney is a perfect situation for travel hacking, credit card points, travel miles or anything to lessen the financial pain.
10x travel is a group that shares details on credit card travel. If you have good credit and your significant other will play along, you might be surprised how cheap it will be. A year to develop the plan and points is very helpful.

My wife and I met in the middle and did a Disney cruise. Still had my nose up to the idea. Went and had an absolute incredible time! It was just enough Disney to make the wife and kid happy but not overly Disney to make dad happy. Food was unreal and service was top notch! Highly recommend!

After putting it off for as long as I could, I finally got roped into it this past year.

My wife is a saint and did everything she could to minimize cost, wait times and inconvenience. While it wasn't my favorite, I can imagine had she not done these things it would be been way worse.

One of the biggest things was getting the passes that allow you to book rides ahead of time. I doubt we waited more than 10-15 minutes for anything there. I can carry a heavy pack all day, but standing around destroys my back. Without those, I'd have been done after day one.

But yeah, it's expensive and crowded. Go with your family, be in the moment, and enjoy the time you get to spend with them.

I've been over 30 times...me are the mouse are close. With that being said, it's not for everyone. My kids hated it, so the wife and I used to leave them home.

A nice trip to a national park sounds great, maybe agree to spend a couple of days, then go on an air boat tour in the Everglades...

My wife said she wanted to take our kids and I said absolutely not, but it took about 5 seconds to realize I was not going to win that battle. We went earlier this summer and it wasn’t too bad, but we only went for one day. It was a long day so that was enough. Kids enjoyed, wife enjoyed it and I thought it was meh but it’s crossed off the list.

I'm talking about Disney World.... my goodness, that Mouse likes his money!

Wife asked to take the kids to Disney World next year. I am all about "Happy Wife, Happy Life" -- so if that's what she want's, I'll make it happen. But I figured I'd at least look into some other options to float by her. 1 week trip, Annual Passes, Animal Kingdom Lodge, air travel, Food... honestly this trip would be pushing close to $15K.

Any other options you guys think I should look into to possibly sway this thing? It would have to be "Grand" probably. Talking small boat cruise to the Galapagos Islands or something crazy to that equivalent, but more family oriented 😂

Kids are 7 and 9, totally cool with traveling. We've done all the major national parks, 10 days in Iceland this year, etc. kids had a blast. Just having a hard time swallowing that kind of money to go stand in lines, bump shoulders with 1,000 people, and hug princesses -- knowing it could be turned into an absolutely amazing nature oriented vacation. Give me all your ideas!
Full disclosure, I am a travel agent that specializes in Disney. I absolutely love Disney, and have ever since I was a small child. So I may be biased ;) After 25 years in the medical field, I became a Travel Agent specifically to sell Disney before expanding into other types of travel.

A couple questions for you: have you ever been to Disney World? Disney World is roughly the size of San Francisco. This surprises many people, especially if they’ve never been. It can be quite a learning curve with all the options you can choose from, and its sheer size. You definitely want to do your research. Or hire a TA to help you.

You stated buying annual passes, but you wouldn’t need an annual pass for a one-week trip. Also, Animal Kingdom Lodge is one of Disney’s deluxe resorts, the 2nd highest priced category.

I don’t know anything about your travel preferences, but just wanted to let you know if you plan on doing this, it won’t necessarily cost you you 15k.

You can sometimes get a discount by buying tickets online or at a store, but the customer service will be lacking if you have questions or problems arise in your travel plans.

Ryan doesn’t love Disney, but goes about once a year with me, and does actually enjoy it. I am very deliberate with choosing things he will like to do, as well as ‘upgrades’ to make it a better experience. And he does with me when it comes to hunting trips ;)

We've been to Disney World and Disneyland several times each. Weve never stayed on property. You can go for a fraction of that price if you dont stay on Disney property. You guys are going for a week. By staying in a bnb, you'll save money on the lodging and youll save money by being able to cook meals too.
You can save money by not staying on property, but can also find deals for the Disney value resorts on property too!

Growing up, my wife's family went to Disneyland several times.

I never wanted to go. First time she took our kids, I stayed home because of work.

Agreed to go several years ago, it was something my kids (tween/teen age) wanted to do as a family. I set the money aside, and committed to staying in budget, which was generous for the event, AND not fussing about prices while we were there. That last part was key. And i had one goal, get a picture with Tigger! Lol.

Awesome trip! As my wife walked around Disneyland, I heard stories of her family from back in the day I'd not heard in 20 years of marriage. Great memories and I'll go back with them, someday.

For my wife, Disneyland was for her like hunting season is for me. Best I can explain it. I got to share in that, with my kids.

It would be like taking my wife and kids on an awesome elk hunt, the combination of fond past memories and excitement of new adventures together.

It's a once in a while thing. Yes, it's expensive, yes the prices are kind of stupid, all that is true.

But it was HER adventure she asked me to be a part of AND it wasn't about me, it was about me sharing something with her and the kids they will remember for a long time.

If you go, decide to have a good time and make it a wonderful memory, then just relax and have fun. Commit to it all the way and be there to create an adventure with them.

I wish that had been a lesson I learned much earlier in life!
Very well said. Marriage is about compromise, and I am so appreciative Ryan will indulge me in my Disney passion as well as I for his hunting passion. I never dreamed I would love hunting when we were married, but getting to experience it through his eyes has made me respect and love it.

I’ve been to Disney twice with the kids. It’s all about them and my wife, and what they want to do. We had a blast both times, and if you have the right attitude, you will too! Yes I agree, the prices have gone to borderline insanity, but that’s life in the 2020s unfortunately.

I’m not exactly a Disney princess kind of guy as most of you would have guessed from my content here haha, but I’ll be damned if I didn’t wear the bright orange Goofy t shirt and had a smile on my face nearly the whole time.

I HIGHLY recommend a Disney cruise! It was our first cruise, and now we cruise every year. Neither one of us even had an interest to cruise, but now it’s one of our favorite things to do. The service was outstanding, food was delicious, and tons of stuff to do, with several adult only spaces. We honestly hardly noticed the kids on-board because the kids clubs are so amazing the kids didn’t want to leave them.
