Hey Guys, Could really use some more experienced help here.

I am an adult onset hunter that just started hunting last year. I was successful with a bow in year 1 but year 2 not so much. The more I was able to scout this year in my area the more clear it became clear that having a rifle would really open up my opportunities.

In comes my dad's old 30-06. He got it from a guy in the 80's in a trade for an old dirtbike so I don't know a lot about it other than it's chambered in 30-06. He shot his 1 and only deer with it when I was a kid and I think it would be cool to hunt with it myself.

My friend gave me a Vortex Viper HS to mount on it, but I need to get some new rings and as part of that I wanted to get some new bases while I was at it but have no idea what it is or how to figure it out.

Any suggestions for bases for it would be great as well if you have any. :)

Here are some pictures I took tonight, if there are any other angles or anything else I can/should be looking for please let me know.

From the little research I have done, it MAY be a Remington 1917 that's been sporterized but I am not entirely sure.

Thanks Guys for any help.

Nice old classic. I would suggest just using the Weaver bases you have now. Lots of rings to choose from that will fit. Make sure the bases fit well with good contact. I like to lap the rings to make sure they are inline.
Good luck and have fun with that rifle. I have an old sporterized rifle that was my Dad's. That old school stuff still works.

Thanks the buddy that gave me the scope has a lapping kit and we were going to do that as part of the mounting process. Do you have any rings you suggest? I was thinking of pairing the scope with some vortex rings as well.

As mentioned- sporterized Remington P17. The "flaming bomb" is an ordnance marking denoting military proof testing.

Back in the day, there was a huge cottage industry sporterizing military rifles- aftermarket stocks and barrels and every small town gunsmith would drill and tap them or bend bolt handles to clear a scope.

I'd get the numbers on the bases in case you need to have another set. It looks like the rear one has some tape or bedding compound acting as a shim- I'd sort that out.

While you have the bases off, measure the screw spacing. Measure from the center to center. This can be done by measuring from the edge of hole on each hole....but you need to use the same side of each hole. (Muzzle side or action side). Measure the screw diameter and pitch. It's likely 6-48 but could be 6-40 or #8.

This could be useful in the future as they may have used a stock base for another rifle.

A few comments on the M1917 rifles.

The front ring is the same diameter as a Remington 700, and a 700 base will fit, if the screw spacing is correct. The rear bridge looks like they contoured it to match the front, so the same base should work for both.

Go online and buy a spare ejector. The stock ejectors will break the leaf spring and it will stop ejecting rounds. Easy fix with a ball point pen spring, but Numrich sells converted ones. This is the only weakness of this action.
Triggers for these are available from Timney, Dayton Traister and Huber Concepts if you want an aftermarket trigger. The one in there looks stock.

I've built a bunch of custom rifles on these actions. They are great for big bore rifles.

So the bases I have on there currently have the number 48 on the front and back bases both but am having trouble finding the same online anywhere.

Do you know if there is another weaver base that would fit that same pattern or where I can go to check?

The Weaver 48 is the rear base for the Winchester Md54 and really early Md 70. Odd base to use.

Here are the specs for that base: .812" long, .504" hole spacing, 1.29" diameter receiver, .395" tall.

Here is the best resource: https://www.brownells.com/guntech/w...ASES No. of Base, .200/.232 59 more rows

I would suggest the #54 as the best replacement that is lower. This is the Browning BAR front and rear base as well, so other brands that fit the BAR will work on your rifle.

Double check that the front ring and rear bridge are the same diameter with a straight edge. If they are not, PM me and we can work out the right bases for you.

Thanks for the help and the resource. They seem to be the same diameter so I think we are good. I'll post some pictures of it after everything gets mounted up. Appreciate it.
