Help , I left my freezer door open

Had the same thing happen some years ago. I freaked, called around, got good info but ultimately bad info from people erroring on the side of caution (which I appreciate) Called my local butcher and he said if it was still pretty cold to touch I was probably ok. We ate it, didn't die and didn't get sick. I don't remember if the quality of the meat was comprised or not so I'm guessing not... I hate to give you bad info and you get sick but this was my experience.

If it's cold it's good. Re freezing previously frozen meat is perfectly fine. The latter is nothing more than a wives tale.

Yep, if it's still cold to the touch, just re-freeze it. I often unthaw beef, or venison and refreeze.

Fish? Don't know about that other than cook now.

I had a freezer in my garage that the plug became dislodged and was pulled out this past October. One of two that I keep deer and fish in. I was on an elk hunt in Idaho, and gone for two weeks. Wife was home by herself and didn’t go into it, nor notice anything wrong. We also had some vacuum sealed bags of deer chili and pasta dishes in there. When I got home, wife asked me to grab a bag of the chili to heat up. I opened the door and WHEW! Swollen bags, and smell! 🤮 No saving any of that. Come to find out, the ground wire prong on the plug somehow broke. The prong was in the receptacle and the plug on the floor. I’m guessing that lessened the amount of resistance the plug could take before loosening enough to pull out of the receptacle. Maybe it got bumped and we never noticed, don’t know.
After reading through this thread, I’ll be purchasing one of the freezer sensors! Never really gave it a thought before.

I had that happen on a standup years ago. Caught it in time and everything refroze fine. I got these stick on child locks for it and haven’t had the door left cracked since. They are super easy to open.

I’ve had the door to one of mine open when making frozen water jugs for the cooler. I refroze everything and had no issues. I now use the Thermoworks node alarm.

Wife left door ajar in the garage freezer a few years back in Southern AZ. We were gone 2 days. opened the garage and seen water in front of the freezer. door was just barely open but did not seal. bottom drawer full of Elk meat and sausage was still marginally cool, so we tossed it the rest of the upper freezer was good. Never thought much about it. Just moved and of course both freezers were down for a few days and empty. After about a week started smelling something rotten ,put my nose down by the front grill on the freezer Wew! pulled it away from the wall. the defrost pan (plastic cup) attached to the compressor full of mold and thick hardened blood. I'm guess being unplugged and fully defrosted it caused the blood from previous door open episode to drain and caused that. you might consider emptying and completely defrosting before carrying on. Sorry so long winded.
