It’s barrel harmonics. The different weight bullet and pressure curve of different ammo and different powder charges flexes the barrel differently. Could be any direction. The poi change is due to the different ammo, which causes different harmonics, which makes the bullet exit the muzzle at a different point in the barrel whip path. It’s not just as simple as heavier vs lighter bullet.
For the handgun example, and that's all I'm speaking for, barrel harmonics in a 5 inch tube or less I would think are not at play. It's the speed of the bullet, the recoil/muzzle flip of the given load. Heavier bullets have more barrel time, lighter bullets have less barrel time. I've experienced it for years and it's well documented.

I'm not the one to give financial advice, but I'd definitely take a 401 k loan, affirm it sizzle to get a Garmin chronograph. Worth its weight in gold. Tough to beat a 20 shot average of your velocities.

Garmin is on my must have list. Been using a ProChrono and magneto speed. Magneto speed was for indoor ranges, but don't like the poi shifting with it on the barrel.
