Just a heads up for guys that have 6.7 Cummins.
Just had one eat the grid heater bolt and take out the motor. I’d suggest doing the banks retrofit asap if you have one that’s out of warranty.
It’s wild to me that this has been a thing since 2007.5 and Cummins hasn’t changed anything.

From the info I just learned about this it doesn’t seem to really matter but for my own curiosity, what year is yours and how many miles?

FYI, there is a Recall on that...and Ram rises it for free before you have a problem.

And Cummins DID do something, they completely redesigned the engine for model year 2025 and 2026. No more grid heater. Intake redesigned and it now looks like the old Banks retrofit. The new ones have glow plugs.

I have a 2026 and that motor is fantastic- so far. The diesels will always have the stigma of complex emission systems. The key is to maintain them and keep them clean.

I also have a 2021 Ram 2500 with 145,000mi in my one company, that we did the grid heater recall- no problems. My Hino Diesel is at right around 200k miles and it's fantastic- you just have to maintain them.

No engine is perfect....this new Cummins comes pretty close.

I've been planning on doing this to mine, I have a 2020. The entire fuel system was replaced under warranty about 2 years ago. Glad I didn't have to pay out of pocket for that one.

I have a '07.5 6.7, its at 365k, and I have the Banks kit on the shelf, this is the motivation I needed to finally install it.

I'd worry more about the hydraulic lifters in the new cgi block trucks than the grid heater bolt in the old 6.7s...

Mine is a company rig, 2022 with 163k. All service done exactly on schedule by dealer.
I imagine there be some more discussion between my company and the service manager at the dealer. Our service gal called me late last with the diagnosis and a quote of $56k to replace the motor. I asked her to please repeat herself because I thought I glitched out and heard her wrong. I asked her if there were any recalls for this and she said no, doesn’t happen very often. I’ll dig into it some more this week.

A good thing to do (with the engine off) is jiggle test the grid heater lead. If the post wiggles any, dont drive it, and do something about it. Either get a new grid heater or replace it with an aftermarket kit.

Could you share a link to the recall? I have an 08 and I’ve read a ton on this and haven’t yet come across a recall just lots of questions why there isn’t. My relay feels good and solid but I may do the heater upgrade just for peace of mind

If you have any additional info on that recall please pass along.
Thanks

To the best of my knowledge there is not a recall.

Cummins uses that grid heater in a lot of different markets. A recall would be a pretty well publicized thing.

If you have a 6.7 cummins, you need to learn how to jiggle check the bolt.

Have a 2017 3500 Mega Cab, truck only have 43k miles. Did the Banks intake and total delete at same time.
Have never seen any recall on the heat grid.

Same here 18 mega, no recall from our dealers. Scary the cost today. $56k throw away trucks, Quick search $12k-40k for a 18 used megacab. I'm at 38k mileage.I have 1 year left on my warranty. Just before it goes out I'll be doing the Banks or Bullydog.

A quick touch with a tig torch solves the problem.

I unhooked it on my wife's 07.5 three years ago, its got 300k miles and still started just fine this morning not plugged in at 12 degrees F. If it gets much colder ill plug it in, but that's mostly for warm up time, I've yet to have it struggle to start down to 0 degrees... just a thought..
