Well two hawken rifles followed me home yesterday. A 50 and 54. I already have another 54 but really only wanted the 50, but they offered too good of a deal for both. So I'm looking at options to extend my range a bit.
I shoot pyrodex p behind a maxi ball (400ish gr??) In the current 54.
Really wanting to try to run a peep setup on at least one maybe both.
Reading all these posts on the 'hotrod hawkens' is sparking my love for these old sidelocks again.

My renegade is a 1in 48 twist and isn’t too particular. You might try the Federal BOR or the new Hornady bullet. Hearing good things about accuracy with both.

I'd find a roundball load to have fun with if your twist supports it. Then perhaps call or email No Excuses with your twist rate and see what they recommend for conicals. I went to all round ball shooting a few years back. They have worked well on game for me and are a hoot to shoot.

I'm pretty sure they are 1-48s. I've never had much luck with patched round balls for some reason. Maybe I need to try it again.

My favorite is the Hornaday Great Plains Bullet. Second is the T/C maxi Bullet/maxi Hunters.
Thanks. -Rufus
