Have you won a hunt raffle?

From what I have 'researched' - Sometimes.

It appears to depend on the value of the prize. There are some rules about value level before reporting is required - if there is no reporting, no 1099 is sent and a person has to self-report the 'additional income' [similar to gambling wins/losses]. I found that $5k seems to be the limit. If the declared value is greater than that, the prize givers have a lot more paperwork to deal with; if under that, they basically have to file only that the prize was awarded and attest to its value. Everything else then is required to be completed by the prize winner.

I think too, the prize giver can chose to withhold taxes [or pay them] when the prize is awarded - I've read this can happen with the high value stuff.

I don't know what the minimum value would have to be to not report it - maybe $600 or whatever minimum value is required before you have to file taxes?
Good info. Thanks. We have a yearly raffle here and one of the prizes is a Swarovski Optics Package with a value of $15K. I always enter, then wonder if I win how to report. Haha

But I never win it. 😢

I won the raffle for the Colorado gov deer tag a few years ago. Spent $100 on 4 tickets for it (though like you I put in for a few every year). I did a ton of research and hunted solo during the rut but the weather and deer never cooperated and ended up hunting with an outfitter the last 4-5 days of the season. It was an incredible experience and I got to hunt units Id never catch in point creep. It wasnt what you read about with all kinds of guides and landowners calling and trying to sell deer. I really didnt have any of that and felt lucky to actually get some help. I also learned a ton about hunting the rut and late season which Id never done before.

I had a friend win a Marco Polo hunt in the grand slam ovis monthly raffle a few years ago. He had a good trip but had to pay a ton in taxes and extra fees. I had another friend with a yukon moose hunt.

Bottom line you can win!

Congrats! Unit 44 correct?

Congrats! Unit 44 correct?

Is this a trap from the rokslide unit police!?!

I know 3 tags that year were filled in 3 different units. One guy still hadnt tagged out when the west of 25 season ended. Dont know if he went to the plains or not.

Yes. Won an elk hunt in the gila through RMEF.

I guess technically I won a rifle raffle at a local banquet, one of the “win this rifle and a chance at this hunt” sort of thing. My name was then drawn again at a regional banquet and then finally was drawn at some larger/national banquet.

Ohh shoot! Lost my mind for a minute. Not sure what I was thinking when I asked this question!😂
But was it in the mountains by Eagle?😂

I posted earlier this year but I won a desert bighorn sheep in Mexico in a raffle. Was actually the first raffle ticket I had ever bought for a big hunt besides local deer hunts and stuff! Was an amazing experience and the outfit and his crew were awesome. In the last 5 years I’ve won the sheep hunt, a vortex scope, custom fishing rod and reel combo, and a pistol

You can’t win if you don’t play!

Not a hunt, but I won the American Suppressor Association raffle 6-7 years ago.

I won a Hudson H9 with factory threaded barrel and a Rugged Obsidian 9 suppressor. They covered all fees & taxes. IIRC, I spent $50 on tickets.

30+ guns and a couple really nice hunts. I'm probably ahead on value vs money spent, but I have spent a lot. Stay out of most raffles any more unless I just want to make a donation or it is something I am interested in. Some people are more lucky than others, but the more you spend sometimes makes you luckier.

We've won a few guns at banquets but never a hunt.
We did buy a hunt in our RMEF local auction one year.
A fully guided cow elk hunt at Moreno East Ranch in NM. We bought it for $600.
Spouse took the BIL on his first and probably only elk hunt.
Other guys in "camp", at the lodge, paid over $3000 for their hunts.

I won the Dall Sheep hunt and package that is in my profile picture at the 2020 WSF <1 Club drawing. Won a new Bergara 7 PRC that my Father just took a New Brunswick Bear with. Also, won $2,500 floor credit at the 2022 WSF Sheep Show.
