This is my first magnum caliber rifle. Been reading and reading and finally figured I would just ask.

What do people recommend for optics on a 6.5lb 23'' barrel .300 WSM?

All suggestions welcomed.

Only criteria that I would like to keep in mind is weight and function. No need to be over scoped.

Looking forward to having some gun to grow into.

Thanks Roksliders

What distance do you plan on shooting? What's your budget? Those will help narrow down choices for you.

Budget is not limited but buying more scope than is necessary is certainly easy and unwanted.
As far as distance goes I am looking to explore the full capability's of the .300wsm

Well, Carlos Hathcock killed dudes over a mile away with a fixed 10x scope. So, anything over a 10x would probably be unnecessary, although very few people on a WSM top out any lower than 16x.

My xbolt 300 WSM used to wear a 3-18 vx6. Now wears a SWFA 3-9 or NXS 2.5-10x42, those are two I'd consider. 9 or 10x is plenty for any hunting shots I have any business taking with a sub 7# 300 wsm. More magnification is nice for punching paper but goes unused on hunts.

I'll disagree with the others, I like at least 16x for long range hunting 18x is about perfect in my opinion.
If you plan on dialing for long shots make sure you get a scope that has a reputation to track true!
I personally went away from "hunting style" scopes after countless tracking issues using vx6's, vx5's, zeiss v4's and v6's.
I currently run a mk5HD 3.6-18 on my main hunting rifle and feel it's the perfect hunting scope from heavy timber to 1100 yards.
And it's super compact which I really like on a hunting rifle.
I'd check out the NX8 line as well

Really need a budget amount, and what weight range you want to be in. Generally, the ones that function best (dialing) are not as light as some others.

They get a little heavy but I love my Nightforce scopes. They can take a beating as well, just in case you get a lil careless. My favorite for hunting on a 300 is the NXS 5-22x50. Good luck

Budget being no issue, I would go with the NF NXS 2.5-10x42 or Swarovski Z6 2-12x50. Those have great performance to weight ratios.

I took my Browning Pro 300 WSM to Alaska this year wearing a Vortex Razor HD LH 3-15x42. It was a good optic but left a little to be desired.

After that trip I mounted a SWFA 6x42, but I haven't been to the range with it yet. I like the idea of a fixed with adjustable turrets for now and I believe the 6x will be good to 400 or 500 yds.

Let me know what you think of that SWFA 6X. Thinking of putting one on a 204 coyote gun, bouncing between it and the 10. I'm thinking under 400 the 10 will be overkill

Leupold Mark 5 HD 18X - I love the scope. Glass is great, tracks perfectly, returns to zero no problem, the zero stop with no shims is really nice, and the clicks are very tactile (Not mushy). Took a Ram with my Xbolt topped with the Mark 5 this year. Love the setup, I don't think you can go wrong here.

I'm using Weaver 2 piece bases with warne mountain light rings.
I have the PR-1 moa reticle on both of my Mk5's, love it

Would you mind posting a photo of one of your MK5's mounted? I am curious about clearances using the 35mm tube.
Thanks

Not a big rifle hunter but enjoy quality when I use my gear. I now have a Browning 300 WM with a Leupold VX3i 3.5-10x40mm with Talley LW Low Rings. Great hunting rifle, I don't use it much for punching paper. I just have it zeroed at 200 yards and feel great with 100-300 yard shoots. Again though, this is a hunting rifle. I keep it simple, no dials, and usually just at 3.5 when hunting.

I did have a VX6HD 3-18x44mm which would have allowed me to explore the full capabilities of the 300 WM. I refocused and knew I just wanted to shoot animals but not at 700 yards.
