Hardest tag to draw in continental United States

After CO dropped the whole pay the entire tag fee up front several tags (moose/sheep) became statistically impossible to draw in a normal human lifetime. That being said some has to draw the tag so I guess you donate your money and hope.

Depending on the hunt, sheep or elk in California has to be up there. One elk hunt had 427 max point applicants competing for 12 tag, one sheep hunt had 412 max point applicants competing for 5 tags.

My friend just pulled a Tule Elk tag for California . He has been putting in for 20 years and finally drew his tag. He pulled a nice bull of of his property that his grandparents bought in the early 1900’s. There are over 30 elk that thrive on his property in Mendocino County.

Non resident was essentially 1:20,000. Max one tag available in the same pool as residents. Random draw. Even for residents this tag has to be one of the hardest to draw at 5 tags for 20K applicants.

I've heard people claim 30+ years for ND Big 3 and for AK Bison. Both are random draw. I've never looked into how long these tags and draws have been available. Just passing on what I've heard people whine about.
I guess your odds increase if your pockets are deep enough for the auctioned tag!

That's easy........Missouri's first ever elk draw in 2020. 19,000 applicants vying for 4 tags. Only 10 bucks to apply...and somebody has got to win right? Maybe some day.

Texas Desert Bighorn would be my guess. Only 10-12 tags issued a year. No idea how many apply but it’s got to be terrible odds.

Nebraska Bighorn Sheep tag- they only give out one tag yearly in the lottery. Odds fluctuate a bit but the average for the last few years = 0.000125%.

If you have enough cash, they do auction another tag off yearly. It is stupid expensive.

This is a good question.

Desert sheep in Utah?

There may be tougher, but that one's damn near impossible.

Thule elk in California?

I feel like I’ll never be able to either draw a tag or being able to afford any trophy sheep hunt.

There is usually only 1 that is raffled off. Two tops depending on aerial surveys. The rest of those tags are given out to landowners who sell them.

Last year in the TX public draw was 6660 apps for 1 tag
