For those of you that hammock camp during times when snow is possible(not dead of winter necessarily), do you feel the need to have doors on your tarp or is there enough coverage from a standard tarp? Can't decide between the HG standard with doors or save money and sacrifice Weight and go with a silpoly tarp from simply light designs with doors. OR get a silpoly tarp and with no doors and be closer in weight. Any suggestions are welcome!

I'm thinking sept. In CO and NM.

None of the above.

I would rather use a windsock with my regular tarp and only put up the tarp when/if I expect a lot of snow.

I really like the idea of a hammock sock, and meant to mention it in my post. thanks for the help! I didn't think it would be waterproof enough to hold snow out.

I've only spent a few nights in the winter with my hammock. I made a tarp that doesn't have doors and it works well enough. I try to hang it lower than normal, just in case something happens. The thing I worry most about is wind blowing snow up into the underquilt.

A tarp with doors may help to trap some heat in. I saw somewhere (don't remember where) that someone actually makes a tarp that can be used with a stove. That would be awesome for hunting/camping in the colder months.

The tarp is actually black. There's a layer of snow on it in the picture.

That's a good example lol. Thank you! I've seen the hot tent hammock on YouTube. It's a pretty impressive idea. I think with your suggestions I'll be going with a regular tarp, it will mostly be for early archery into early rifle at most then it's time to switch shelters!

Also, allukban, is that a seek outside pack?

I have and use both. The doors are great to stop wind. Wind is a temperature robber. With a tarp with "doors" they can be easily folded back when there is no need for their use.
