Proposing increase in deer tags in the Gunnison basin. Overall pretty informative. The hypotheses and data explaining hunting dissatisfaction was lacking IMO.

I have a feeling I will be in the basin for a 3rd season tag. First timer in the area. Excited to see if it’s as bad as they say.

With the later season dates I'm willing to bet point creep is gonna blow up. 2 to maybe 3 more points than usual to pull a tag? I was thinking of applying for a tag in there after spending some time in the area last year. But I would like to see how points are gonna work out in there.
Is it fair to say that what use to be enough points wont be with the new season structure?

So pumped I'm trying to drop a dozen points on a unit I can't even go to... Maybe CPW will let me turn the tag in and get a preference point if the county remains closed. Could be some epic hunting if you're a Gunny resident with a tag

I'm wondering if the sentence about the deer tag increases not being proportional across the seasons in DAU 25 because of later 3rd and 4th season dates means that most of the additional tags will be in the 2nd season? What do you guys think? I put in for 2nd season in 67.

I think next year we will see lots of guys who were in the chase for 4th season drop into a 3rd season app and cause it to jump.

If you look at the draw recap you can see how many guys could draw 3rd (at the points it took for ‘19) but are applying for 4th. I just picked one of the GB units to see how much it could jump. “If” the guys who are caught between 3rd and 4th apply for 3rd it could get pretty bad. It’s hard to predict because we have no idea how many guys will jump but it could be as high as a 4 point jump.

Also hard to take into account the guys that aren’t applying for the draw but are just building points and sitting on a fat stack of them. If you look at the numbers on how many guys have 15+ points it’s pretty crazy (almost 6000 in last years draw who didn’t draw out) They could swing draw odds big time by jumping in.

I didn't catch the part where almost 6000 people were sitting 15 plus points, odds are definitely going out the window with the later dates. I only have 5 points and was considereding a second rifle tag, I will definitely be waiting for the results to see how much it jumps.

I'm curious to see how these local changes around Gunnie affect draw odds, but there's also the season timing shift in Colorado that might cause some changes across the whole state. It's going to be an interesting few years in Colorado!

I'll be tracking this closely, but I expect chaos. The GoHunt and other draw odds predictors will likely be ripping their hair out methinks in '20 and '21

Hate to say it but this is probably long overdue for Gunny, populations have been dwindling for well over 6 years now with the influx of out-of-staters, and the quality bucks are fewer and farther between. Deer are going to be slaughtered with the season changes I bet.
It's definitely anyone's guess as to how mule deer will fare over these coming years in Colorado, so many changes are happening out of CPWs control.

Influx of out-of-staters? How do you figure that? The ratio of residents to non-residents hasn't changed at all. If tags are increased, there is a bigger influx of residents than non-residents.

He may have meant population growth of Colorado......

Yes exactly, it's not just hunters, outdoor recreation has seen a huge impact in this state. Wildlife movement is definitely changing. I've seen my unit go from a hidden gem to a tourist destination.
I totally agree that these tag & season changes will be interesting, this changes everything for draw odds. But I've also heard rumors that OTC will be removed in coming years.

That would be interesting if they got rid of OTC. I doubt they will as the OTC tags are CPWs cash cow. And with the parks side of things constantly draining the bank account they need all the money they can get.
