I saw that a lot of the German pointers were breed for brids and fur both was wondering if anyone still uses then for furs if so did you trained them like you would a hound.

Train like a bird dog, stop them from running big game, and shoot the smaller furry things they find. My pudelpointer figured out fur very quickly. He was hell on rabbits and feral cats, but also treed coons, marten, and a bobcat too. He also liked to lure coyotes back into shotgun range. My wirehair is a good rabbit and cat hunter, but that is about it.

You don't want your pointer running amuck like a hound; they learn to bust birds that way. Birds are the only real reason to put up with a bird dog 😉 fur is just a little bonus.

Blood tracking is a whole different game that I never got into, mostly because I found it a pain to bowhunt and have the dog close by.

Having owned labs for ducks , a springer lab cross for blood tracking and hounds. I don’t know if you could find one to do it all. It might but not as good as owning the right dog for the right task. If you could it would take a better trainer than me. Labs fetch, hounds chase and tree, pointers point and a blood tracker is a dog with a good nose that is smart and trainable. Dogs can do amazing things if they know what you want of them.

i am a big fan of GWP's. Have had a couple great ones. I have a 10 month old now that looks like he is going to be amazing with very little formal training. He does love to find critters with feathers or fur.

Depends on how you want them to work
It’s hard to be the natural ability of a DD.

I personally like working chessies and labs

I too have a Drahthaar. Super cool dog for a guy who kills shit. She brought me a coyote at 14 months old.

Love the German dogs. My current DD retrieves everything under the sun: feathers, fur, scales.... whatever. He is hell on small creatures, but amazing in the house and is so good with my 16 month old, that I can forgive him busting birds sometimes
I didn't really 'train' him on fur - just good retrieve habits so he will happily give me his 'prizes'.

Same here, love the DD breed. All business in the field and a good house dog.
