Gundog training

I am getting a lab puppy in a couple weeks and have been looking hard into self training watching tons of YouTube videos and looking through forums. I want her to be trained up for first being a family dog. But second being a waterfowl dog and sometimes coming with me summer scouting and shed hunting. I’ve really enjoyed watching the Standing Stone kennel training videos and how he trains the pups and gets into the ecollars and wanted to see if anyone has had experience with paying for their class for a lab. I’ve also seen the cornerstone site but it’s pretty which isn’t a huge deal to me. But I’ve read a lot of people saying they don’t do the ecollar training. I’m just looking for some help in what I should do and would like to hear experiences between any of those programs. Thank you guys.

I am not lab guy, so I will let others give you advice to how and what to train for, but my recommendation would be to join a local HRC or NAHRA club. Even if you don't intend to run the dog in their test, which you should imho, they are great help and will get you on right track.

They usually organize training days almost every weekend. Some chapters even have dedicated puppy training days. You will mee top tier trainers and dawg people whose advises or insights will be helpful.
Also, meeting likeminded people is good for your mindset.

Freddy kings retriever trainer best 60 dollars you can spend . The most important part is the first six months .

There are a heap of resources. Freddy King, Bill hillman, and Lisa kanes book are all good places to start. Clubs are hit or miss, I've been attending a could local ones for over a year and still can't get a training partner lined up.

Keep in mind not all dogs mature at the same pace, my first 6 months with the current pup really didn't accomplish much because he didn't care about retrieving at all. Now he does and we are making good progress.

I will definitely check out Freddy king for that price. I’m in Southern California and see that there’s a couple clubs near by. So I will go and check it out for sure. My dad actually had our old hunting dog trained at the club for a couple months back 15 years ago.

Unless your a good enough trainer to be able to incorporate and understand the difference of each program and the task your trying to accomplish pick one and stick to it. I have seen way to many confused dogs because people try and mix and match and not knowing how to put the building blocks together

I paid for Retriever Roadmap for a while, on the advice of a buddy. Not worth it, was a waste of money. They spend way to much time on "this is how it's done" and show you a perfect dog, and not enough time on what you do when your dog doesn't do it right.

What ACTUALLY worked for me was joining a local club. Cost is less than the freakin videos and gave me access to some pro trainers who were very happy to help out a new guy, as well as access to training grounds and birds

That’s what makes Freddy’s program great you get to see the good bad and ugly as he says.

For me my club is three hours away so I don’t get to train with people often and it really helped me. Then getting to meet more people I now have pros I can call. They are very helpful

I joined Freddy’s earlier and have watched some of the beginning videos. I like it and am definitely going to use that as my default go to.

I’ve got the dog club within 45 minutes of my house as well. So I’m going to go check that out asap as well.
