Group Hunt Recommendation

My Father in law has mentioned several times that he wants to go on a hunting trip with the guys in our family. There are 6 of us, and only two of us are hunters. His preference would be a week long elk hunt based out of a tent. My concern is that a week long hunt where success rates are extremely low would be a dry experience for the ones in our group who don’t hunt consistently. Obviously the time spent outdoors would be great regardless, but I’m wondering if there is a target species that would provide a higher success rate while also giving us the chance to enjoy some great terrain/country. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

The only thing that comes to mind as a big game species with good odds of 6 dudes tagging out in a week at one location is caribou.

I’m sure you could go somewhere and shoot pigs but you mention scenery and pigs usually aren’t found in places like that.

I should clarify, we don’t all need to tag out. I’d say even just one animal between the 6 of us would be a success.

Hog hunting came to mind for me as well but I had the same thought as you, the scenery isn’t great. Would definitely be fun though

South Africa. Went with a group of friends and was the best week ever. We have taken alot of group trips (mostly golf) and Africa hunting was the best.

Non hunters riding around seeing elephants and giraffes is cool.

Depends. You can get them through auctions and also depends on what animals you take. But can be done for 3-5k per person, cheaper for the non hunters.

A group of 6 of us went on a cow elk hunt through an outfitter. Very similar situation to yours. Most of our group could not make time to practice. When we showed up and shot a little with the guide to check our zeros the situation got real quiet and tense. Guys were not ready. Luckily we were able to tag out but there was definitely some rodeos. For how much we spent on tags, butchering, and travel we may as well done a trip to Africa. Its a trip non hunters really get their monies worth.

May want to consider doing a guided hunt for Coues whitetail in Mexico. With 6 of you, your group likely would have a ranch to yourselves. Depending on where you are at, scenery can range from typical Sonoran desert all the way to sky island.

Safer than walking around a liberal utopia in the US with a $100 around your neck.

If you dont want to travel to africa I would recommend utilizing either a drop camp or an outfitter. Its a lot of expensive gear to only use once. Logistically getting 6 guys in the same spot at the same time is hard enough. Most western hunts you really have to expect minimum 250 yard shots with awkward positions. Your father in-law has a great idea for your family story sessions for years. Make sure everyone has realistic expectations. You want those storues to be favorable.

I agree. It’s going to be a great experience regardless of how the hunting actually goes but it’d be nice to be able to kill something and bring it home. It will be easier to convince our wives that it’s worth doing it again!

I did 4 or 5 every year until this year, super laid back doesn’t require getting up before the sun. Lots of action nearly all day long. Great for kids and getting newbies into hunting.

I can send you a guy who might have spots this year but definitely next year.

Might consider a black bear hunt.
