I finally convinced my friends and we are hunting the Grand Mesa with elk tags for this season, and man, am I stoked! But also, I'll be honest, a little overwhelmed. This is my first time elk hunting, and it feels like I'm trying to learn a whole new language.
I've been buried in old forum posts and articles, and I've tried my best to get all the right gear based on those reads. My pack's loaded, boots are broken in, and I'm ready to put in the work.
Now, though, as the season creeps closer, the real questions are hitting me. Should I be glued to my spotting scope, trying to pick apart distant hillsides for hours on end? Or is it more about sneaking through the dark timber, hoping to surprise a bull in his bedroom? Should I be focusing heavily on E-Scouting as due to work I won't be able to head out before season which is super unfortunate... Everyone talks about north-facing slopes for bedding, but are there other strategies for the Grand Mesa I should be focusing on? What other strategies should I even be considering in this country?
If anyone out there has some Grand Mesa elk experience they're willing to share—what's worked for you, what hasn't—I'd be all ears. Just trying to learn from those who've been there and make the most of this incredible opportunity.
