Grain free dog food??

My vet said the same, feeding nutri source with grain both drahts doing well on it.

Most pro bird dog guys are feeding Purina Pro Plan 30/20. That was endorsement enough for me. That stuff got one of my setters to 12 and another a week shy of 16. Both pretty old for pure bred working dogs.

I would do it again assuming my next dog isn’t crazy allergic.

I stayed away from grain free food. Purina pro plan will remain the current dogs food and most likely the future dogs food.

My wife is also a vet and has seen multiple problems with house dogs being fed like their a wolf. I think it's called dialated cardiomyopathy that happens from grain free diets.

Pro plan or Royal Canin. Grain free was a fad and a bad one.

A lot of the grain free manufacturers fail to add a supplement called taurine into the kibble when forming. Normally found in grains. For years the vet community knew it was an essential compound in cats (mostly meat based diet)

However since dogs are omnivores. Assumed they didn’t need it. Well now years of data have shown that taurine is essential to dogs as well and with these grain free diets we’re essentially feeding them like cats.. and unfortunately seeing the detriment now.

Taurine deficiency in our canines has shown to have a correlation with Dilated Cardiomyopathy… jury is still out of this is only in genetically pre-disposed individuals or if it is in all dogs.

I’m not opposed to grain free diets if indicated for food / skin allergy or even personal preference. But under the ingredients list make sure they have a measurable value of taurine

Everybody wants to hate on the big companies but Purina, eukanuba, Hill’s and Iams are reputable companies and have 50 + years of continuing science and research.. don’t fall into the hippy fad like yuppies.

My duck dog gets fed Purina pro-plan performance for what it’s worth.

We fed Victor Hi-Pro Plus to a previous dog. It is not grain free. It did have Taurine on the ingredient list, however. I thought it was interesting.

Current dog is feeding Purina Pro Plan Performance.

Had to put one of our dogs down a few months ago from heart failure. After we found out he had it he managed fine for over a year but it ultimately got him. Fed him grain free food the whole time we had him because I thought I was giving him better food. Come to find out from our vet that grain free is linked to heart failure in dogs.

Another vote for Pro Plan here. I’ve got 2 GSPs and they’ve done well on it for years. Feeding approx 380 g, once a day. I mix in water, raw eggs, meat, fish, liver, fish oil, canned wet good, rice, scraps, etc to keep it interesting.

Heard the same thing from my vet… said my chocolate lab had a heart murmur so I switched him to purina pro plan and seems to be working for him so far…

There's some truth to this, but the first thing they usually eat is the guts.

Gotta get your vegetables somehow.

Yup. This is common in wolves and coyotes. There's a term for it that is escaping my memory. Anyway, the partially digested stomach contents are quite nutritious to canines.
