Last note: both HAM and GMRS require station identification after each transmission, or sequence thereof.
FRS @ 0.5W and MURS at 2.0W do not, but still require FCC certified Part 90A and Part 95 radios, respectively (which the Baofeng and ilk are not.)
Many people buy the blister-pack radios, kick on the GMRS and just start transmitting. Some of the GMRS users are pretty ... um ... intense? ... about keeping unlicensed people off those channels if they're not licensed.
The CHIRP software (third party, Google it) helps with programming the Baofeng et al.
