Hi folks, new member here and my first post. I drew my first out of state tag and am planning a solo trip to Utah South Slope Bonanza / Vernal any weapon hunt. I’ve been looking at on x and google earth daily, looks like some awesome country. Any of you out there familiar with this area any advice on elevations to focus on or areas to avoid would be much appreciated. What type of weather I might encounter that time of year?

Congrats on your tag! I've hunted Utah for 10 yrs now. I dont know Alot about your unit because I hunt in a unit south of there. I can tell you if you are the mid Oct hunt expect some wind. It seems every year the wind blows part of the time in my hunt. There is always the chance of some rain/snow so take that into consideration as well. Otherwise spend plenty of time behind the glass and put in the miles and you will have success!

Good luck. I'm also going solo out of state this year.

The area has tons of public access but you'll see a lot of hunters opening weekend. The high country in the northern part of the unit might be more fun to hunt, but there are deer throughout. If it snows, it might be hard to get around in the high country, but it will make finding deer easy.

That’s great to hear! I was reading something that kind of made me think the same thing ... sounds like there is a lot of deer and also a lot of hunters in that unit. If I’m not mistaken the northern part of that unit is the Flaming Gorge area and has a lot of steep canyons that might hold some more mature deer and attract less hunters?

Ashley creek gorge has some good country to look at if there’s good snow on the ground . Or 7k to the top of Taylor peak if the weather hasn’t showed up
