What answer do you want to hear?

If you're confident in the Kimber, keep it. I built a very nice custom. Can't bring myself to sell the Kimber like I'd planned.

I used my Kimber 308 on my mule deer this year, but hand loaded with the 166grain Hammer Hunter. Exceptional performance. That's the only thing I'd recommended maybe changing. The Hammer's are exceptional performers. Same load will be coming with me for Spring bear too.

I'll confirm powder details tomorrow. But off the top of my head it was using Lapua Brass, at 2750fps. 3/4 MOA 5 shot groups with limited load development.

im very curious, I’ve used the 181 hammers but I have been interested in the 161.

You are golden. But more ammo components or ammo and shoot a ton before your hunt. I think your money will go further that way when the time comes to pull the trigger on an animal.

I run the 152 hh in my kimber because it’s a 12 twist. Haven’t tried the 166, but the hammer website claims a minimum of 10.5 twist. I’d be curious to see if you can get them to stabilize in your kimber, assuming it’s a 12 twist like mine. The 152 shoots great though. I seat them as long as I can and stuff the case with varget.

There was limited available load data on this, as per usual, work up carefully, this was in my rifle.

In my rifle, I found a load at 43.5 grains of 8208XBR, 215M primer, COAL @ 2.815", 2750fps.

I tested Varget, but stopped without hitting pressure. It was heavily compressed and I've seen huge velocity spikes with Varget when it's as compressed as I had it, so stopped. Max was 2650fps.

The 166 seemed to be stabilized, I'm at sea level and at 300 yards on paper the holes were round, no key hole.

152 Hammer I've run up to 2850 with Varget, but my best load was below 2800. I feel like there is maybe another 100fps with this bullet, from other loads I've developed, but I was running out of time/supplies, so moved on.

Nice. I’m at 2800 with the 152 also.

You should really be asking if that rifle is the one you really want in the grip and grin photos. Does it have the stuff to make those photos their best?

All this ballistics talk and will it kill a goat stuff is secondary to making those photos pop for your Instagram followers. We know a .308 will smoke a goat, but think about your fans.

Jeremy

Or just use what you have and post photos when you're done. Be safe and have fun.

Mine is a 10 twist, talked to the guys at hammer, they said I should pretty easily be able to get those 166s at 2900, I ordered 2 boxes to try.

Having just purchased a new goat rifle in .308 (literally 5 minutes ago), I have a newly peaked interest in this thread.:)

Nice!!! what did you get? I love my 308!!! I'm looking forward to playing with the 166g hammers, I even ordered some brand new brass earlier since most of mine is on its 2nd or 3rd firing at this point, I figured I'd take some time and really make some perfect ammo for this hunt.

One thing I absolutely need to do is install or have installed a pic rail so I can use an atlas bipod.
