Give your self defense carry gun a test every once in a while….

I have an XDM in 10mm with a light and red dot that I keep on the night stand. Occasionally I use it for backup when hog hunting too. I like the power of the 10mm and the high capacity of the XDM. I am planning a trip where i will take it with me so I decided to take it to the range to see if the red dot is still on.

To my surprise, the first two rounds did not fire, there were light primer strikes. I pulled the slide off and found that the firing pin seemed to be gummed up. I gave it some oil and got it working but took it home and field stripped the slide. The firing pin was not that dirty, but i guess there was some old oil or grease on it that made it sticky. I cleaned it up well and lubed it but will make sure I test fire it a little more often. I think it has been a couple years since the last time I fired it. I'd hate to really need it and it not fire.

So, test your carry guns occasionally to ensure they function well and are ready when you need them.

I had a similar experience with my Glock 23. Carried in the bumpy truck for a while and when I took it out to test, it wouldn't fire. Had to also clean things up.

I totally agree with this. On the way out to deer camp last week and pulled out my Glock 19 it’s always my hunting carry and went to shoot a grouse and it wouldn’t even cycle.

I should probably go get the Glock 26 that’s been under my truck seat for the past 5 years and make sure it works.

It would be a good idea. I was pretty surprised actually.

I’m really glad that I didn’t need it in a self-defense situation out there with a critter or person.

My buddy came over to practice drawing from concealment. With his M&P he's been carrying for over a year. Draws it and "click" racks the slide. New round "click."
That gun went back in the safe. Now he has a Glock

but I’ve got some frog lube coming

Brother, respectfully, do not use that stuff. Nor its sister lube, Seal 1. Google around to see what kind of problems it has had over the years - it's the single worst for bad reviews. It is particularly bad after sitting for any period of time.

Oh really, hmmm. I’ll do some more research on it for sure. I some good ol fashioned gun oil I should probably use then huh?

Yeah...it's not something I'd have said like that if it were a preference thing, or an opinion thing. It's a danger thing, especially in cold weather or in guns that sit a long time, especially if there's heat cycling from being in a truck, or being fired hot and then just put away. Way too many people reporting it shutting down their guns, including people I know personally from about a decade ago.
