Getting into and out of Canada with rifles

Leaving for Alberta in 2 weeks and just want to make sure I have this correct....

I need a completed US Customs form 4457 to get back into the US after the hunt
I need a completed but not signed or dated Canadian Non Resident Firearms Declaration form 5589
I need the contract from my outfitter for the bear hunt.

Any thing else?

Also where do I get those forms?

That's all you need. Just print them off. Take the US form to your local customs office and have them sign date and stamp it. I have never ben asked for a contract but probably a good idea. The new Canadian firearms Dec form also has you claim your ammo so make sure you put that down in the labeled box

good luck and you are correct do not sign the canadian rcmp form before the canadian customs is telling you so.

when did they start the US customs form? I went to Quebec in 2006 and only did a Canadian form for the rifle that I had to mail them a copy before getting there. Coming back there was no paperwork at all. I pulled up on the US side and asked if they wanted to look at the meat, they said no, and I left.

I recall it being about 2012ish that they started requiring the U.S. form.

Is a form for reentry to the US new? I’ve been twice, and don’t recall having to have a form to reenter the US.

I didn't need the 4457 when I crossed back over after my Manitoba moose hunt in 2023. I did drive up, however, so I wasn't dealing with CBP at an airport.

almost impossible i will since we can use them only mostly for range toys unless you have an ATC or authorization to carry and as we cannot purchase or even transfer any now unless you are holding an ATC ... and as you cannot use them for hunt the remaining will be for competition ... good luck with that i will say. we are a great country but it really sucks for gun laws.

In 2019 when we went to BC I learned about the form 4457 the day before we left. I made the 1.5 hour drive to get the form on our guns the night before we left because our flight left the next morning before customs opened. We didn’t end up needing the forms to get back in. Hell they don’t even check our guns at all. Kinda scary if you think about it! We go back in two months and I will have our 4457 forms just in case.
