Ive got enough points to draw a general tag, hopefully this year, if not 2021. hunted mule deer and antelope a lot but never elk. want to go with an outfitter my first time but don't want to get rooked. I have points in montana and Wyoming. looking at a a good chance for a 300"+ bull. got a little to spend but not excessive like $10k or anything like that. looking at the areas around the bighorns. looking at 66 or the 90s and 100s on the west side of the state. probably want to do a rifle hunt. thanks

There is always a chance at a 300 incher from a general unit. There are 350+ bulls in many of those areas. But I doubt it would be the first bull you see. Are you prepared to pass up a 270 inch 6 point bull for that?

When I did outdoor shows selling elk hunts I always took the bull on the right because it has removeable antlers. I would have guys talking to me all the time point at it and say “I’d be happy with a 300 incher like that one”. Then I’d tell them it was officially scored and in the Pope and Young book at 260 3/8. The reply was the same every time... “Well ok then I’d be glad to shoot a 260 incher” I’m sure you would too.

Take a look at Bugling Winds Outfitters. Guy on Texas Bowhunter hunted with them this fall and has great reviews of them.

I have talked to the guys at crooked sky, before the ME episode came out. It was funny sitting there listening to it and the light bulb went off that I had talked to Stewart. I hunt some of the same ground that they do on DIY hunts. If you go during archery you will see more than one 300" rifle is hit or miss on the year. Regardless they are straight up guys that wont steer you wrong.
Double Diamond is who I could recommend, tell them that you are looking for a 300" bull and they will do their best to get you on one, even if you have to wait a few more years to accumulate more points.

In my opinion you’re wasting your time trying to line that up. Those guys are busy catering to paying clients and out of contact with the world anyway. They’re packing hunters, gear, food and hay in and out, driving guys back and forth from the airport and on standby for the next guide that has an elk on the ground.

I hunted mule deer with double diamond and there were elk hunters in my camp
I would recommend them for and it seemed like a lot of guys getting and seeing elk... I also left early bc I tagged out early

300 inch elk seemed likely in the camp I was in but I know their other camps guys were shooting 350 inch elk. probably need a lot of points for those camps

I saw a 330 elk while deer hunting, had it at 100 yards, it always works that way

thanks for the insight fellas. ill look into those outfits. I think 300 is just a number in my head. I have a shed off of a 270ish bull I found years a go and im sure id be very happy with it. I live too far away to go scout regularly and learn them and honestly don't know much about hunting them nor do I have any hunting buddies that have hunted them with much success. got a few friends that drop $10k every year and got a few that have been on expensive dyi camping trips, however. got a little money setting there im willing to put on an elk. seeing how im 47 and and still haven't been hunting them, I doubt I got many elk hunts in my future.

Hit up non typical outfitters, they operate out of G so it’s only 3 points to draw an elk tag! Great guys and amazing hunters
