Gaps in specialized ammo

"... Then why did you bother? TSS is throwing away dollar bills for no reason if you arent going to utilize its advantages. ..."

Because the .410 was a "gift" for the express purpose of turkey hunting. My hope is that it will make the .410 more effective....but I won't be using them for any 40 yard shots

I have no doubt that TSS is awesome, but not at the cost of the ammo. If TSS was more affordable, I would probably go full TSS.
As it is, I have about 15 boxes of 16 gauge 6's, 7's and 8's and nobody loads TSS in 16 gauge commercially. Not yet anyway.

I just reread bluetick78's original post. I believe he's asking why there isn't something besides expensive TSS that reliably kills turkeys at the 40 yard or plus ranges and what that may be.

Quick story. Years ago, lauded outdoor writer Phil Bourjaily published a story.
He had been testing one of the magnificent, magnum, turkey specific ammos. I don't recall which. (Longbeard?)
Bourjaily claims that a bird hung up on him at (IIRC) 60 yards or so. Stating he had tested his shotgun with the ammo, he felt confident in attempting the shot. He did and killed the turkey!
I might suggest that "bluetick78" ask his question of Mr. Bourjaily at Field and Stream.

"... If lead 8’s work at longer ranges—waiting on you for this, ..."

"..I'm still trying to pin down Amos Keeto on the range where he thinks 8's are sufficient. .."

Go back and reread my posts.
I NEVER claimed #8 shot would reliably kill turkeys beyond 40 yards!
That's on you!

Tom Roster is a shill for steel shot. (and presumably TSS now)

P.S. - Mr. Roster claims #4 lead shot "does not" throw a pattern dense enough to reliably kill turkeys at 40 yards. But still, alot of people still use #4's and swear by #4 shot! ?????

This has to be entertaining for someone?

Man, you are so correct here. Im pushing you because the topic was longer range and you answered with 8’s as a solution—so why are you surprised when I ask you about using 8’s FOR THE PREMISE OF THE ORIGINAL QUESTION? 8’s may be a solution to something, its just probably not the solution to this question.

Op: what shells that arent tss give me longer range than standard lead in 12ga 2 3/4” or 16ga.

Amos: PATTERN DENSITY. LEAD 8’s!

Me: but lead 8’s dont have sufficient penetration at some range. Are you saying lead 8’s are the answer for longer range? The reason that works with tss is because it is denser than lead and penetrates better, and OP wanted longer range.

Amos: why do you want to shoot turkeys at long range? TSS IS EXPENSIVE. Lead 8’s! Pattern Density! Quail!

Me: right, but OP (and me and lots of others) DO want that longer range. Are you saying lead 8’s will work at longer range? Quail arent turkeys.

Amos: Lead 8’s work fine, I have x-rays! You’re wrong, quail arent turkeys!

Me: yeah, thats what I said, but you didnt answer the question. At what range do 8’s work? Are you saying you’ve used them at longer range, ie 40 yards? Tom roster says 6’s dont penetrate at 45, and youre telling us 8’s are the solution for longer range (the original question)? Again, we’re looking for longer range, the topic is longer range.

Amos: I never said that! Tom roster bad! Longer range bad!

Me: around and around we go…again…🙄

"... low brass #9 lead skeet loads work well at 35-40+ yards on turkeys? ..."

They will pretty well "dust" clay targets at 35 to 40 yards. Why not a turkey's head? ...or neck?

Because clays are brittle and easier to kill than turkeys? But even 8’s get iffy at a legit 40 on clays if they’re on-edge. And thats from lots of personal experience.

Yeah, I'm sure "bluetick78" is getting quite chuckle! LOL!

Honestly Macintosh, lead is only as good as lead has been since it was first poured down the barrel of a muzzle loader.
Hevi shot or Bismuth will out do lead, but not like TSS.
IIRC, either Jim Zumbo or Bob Brister, one of the two, was known for making ridiculously long shots with a shotgun.
Just like Fred Eichler and Byron Ferguson made shots in excess of a hundred yards with a bow.
The Gould brothers broke clay targets at 160 yards!

The everyday Average Joe just isn't capable of such doings.
Then there was Annie Oakley, Ad Topperwein, Tom Knapp and others who were blessed with those skills and abilities.
