Game laws that might mess you up.

About app check in: I don't know about every state but in Arkansas you can check it in on your phone without cell service. It time stamps the info and sends it out the next time that you have service. Doesn't give you confirmation number until you get service though but at least you are legal to transport your game. Only need paper tag and confirmation number if you drop off at prprocessor.

I will have to check into that on the SC app. I hunt ag farms..if you can't get signal where your at just dive to the other side of the farm.

Black bear is some of the best game meat you’ll come across.

Definitely. Black Bear is better eating than elk.

Hunting Colorado for trophy bear because you want a giant hide is kind of laughable. You can find bigger bears in TN, NC, KY, PA, NY, WI etc.

I don’t believe that is correct advise, I could not find any sort of hunting exemption when I looked years ago and the laws aren’t getting looser here. Pretty sure CO requires 50% of the firearm exposed or it’s considered concealed, ie coattail rule.

Colorado Revised Statutes Title 18. Criminal Code § 18-12-204. Permit contents--validity--carrying requirements

(3)(a) A person who may lawfully possess a handgun may carry a handgun under the following circumstances without obtaining a permit and the handgun shall not be considered concealed:

(I) The handgun is in the possession of a person who is in a private automobile or in some other private means of conveyance and who carries the handgun for a legal use, including self-defense;  or

(II) The handgun is in the possession of a person who is legally engaged in hunting activities within the state.

Hated this one for the longest time. Had to relocate.

Can Kissing Cousins Wed in the US?
First-cousin marriage is allowed in some form in approximately 20 U.S. states, though the exact number and restrictions vary. States that allow it with no restrictions include Alaska, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and Virginia. Other states, such as Arizona, Illinois, Maine, and Utah, allow it only under specific conditions, such as if the couple is over a certain age or receives genetic counseling.”

Idaho's definition of hunting is broad and can definitely hang a person up.

Definition of Hunting Hunting means chasing, driving, flushing, attracting, pursuing, worrying, following or on the trail of, shooting at, stalking, or lying in wait for any wildlife whether or not such wildlife is then/ or subsequently captured, killed, taken, or wounded.
I don't see a problem with that. It is oddly specific, as they would say if this were a joke.

South Carolina plays much more broadly, in fewer words:

“Hunting” means the act of trying to find, seek, obtain, pursue or diligently search for wildlife with the means and intent to take or attempt to take such wildlife.

This can cause a lot of problems. One that has always stayed on my brain is this:

It is unlawful to hunt, shoot or in any way kill deer from a motorboat, raft or any other water conveyance, or to molest a deer while any part of the deer is in water (50-11-730).

Pair the definition of hunting with a canoe, kayak, sneakboat, or bassboat to get in and out and I'd say you're not immune from a ticket unless your weapon is cased and you're throwing a roostertail. Maybe not even then.

Plus, this is a very watery state. Sometimes it's hard to find a deer that's completely dry just so you can show the warden ... LOL

===

And I really do wish they'd do away with the "head must be attached" rule.

It would make getting deer out of some places so much easier.

Any waterfowlers in here? Federal law ( I believe) ends hunting hours at sunset, not a half hour after sunset, like much of our big game hunts. So hours are half hour before sunrise until sunset.

TN no longer has physical tags.......

The bear regulation on weight has always confused me. I get that is supposed to stop you from killing a young bear, bury I've often wondered what the situation would be if you've shot, say, a 200lb bear in a steep, overgrown valley bottom, bone it out to pack out in 2 40lb loads & get stopped by the possum cops on load 1.

Interesting. Do you know if that was always the case or when did it enact? I couldn’t find an exception a decade ago but might have just missed it.

In NY you can use either "E-Tags" in conjunction with an app;
or paper tags - and I mean regular 8x11" white printer paper tags - that you have to bag to protect it from the elements. You don't have to tag the carcass until you drag it out to camp or a vehicle.

Having your bow in a case in Colorado, years ago had a buddy pick me up at a trail head after sunset after spike camping a few days. Got in the truck and quickly got pulled over and a ticket for not casing my bow. Only wild life violation in my adult life lol. Always have a soft case now in the truck or utv.
When I started archery hunting a few years ago, I realized a few days before my first season that I didn't have a case for this purpose. I dug through the attic and found a giant duffle bag that my bow fit into, thinking "this will work to keep me legal until I buy a proper case."

...Fast forward 4 years, and I still use the giant duffle bag.

This thread is a good example of actually reading the rules/regulations/laws rather than relying on hearsay. Four incorrect posts about Colorado from four different people who believed they were right enough to post it. I've read some wonky "the law is ____" stuff on here for sure.

Michigan- you cannot have your firearm loaded outside of legal shooting hours.

(in my case this was during deer firearm, not sure about other seasons.)
It gets tricky though. When im out hunting, i have tags for elk deer turkey and bear that i am actively hunting while i am also actively hunting coyotes. Knowing coyotes are out at night, and already having had a mountain lion snarl at me in the dark once this year, im not going to unload my rifle while walking out.

Idaho - must stop at IDGF game check stations even if unsuccessful or hunting outside of Idaho. Maybe someone with a better understanding of Idaho laws knows the answer but the way I've seen the law explained there isn't a defined time limit to when you were previously hunting/fishing/trapping. If I was hunting 2 days ago in my home state am I really expected to stop?

Missouri - Possession of an illumination device and a firearm isn't a allowed. Enjoy looking for blood, walking your dog, or hiking out in the dark. Haven't heard of it being enforced unless obviously spotlighting but the way "hunt" and "harass" are defined leaves much room for interpretation.

Quoted from this current years hunting regs handbook.
"Landowners may use artificial lights on their property, but while doing so may not be in possession of — or be in the company of someone who possesses — a firearm, bow, or other implement used to take wildlife.

Artificial lights may not be used to search for, spot, illuminate, harass, or disturb other wildlife than the above."
That one obviously does not mean go hunting without a flashlight. It simply is for an easy win to make an arrest for people who are obviously poaching and causing issues.

I don't like this. Trying to get the deer, often multiple deer loaded up and processed while playing with your phone in poor service area and trying to find the tag number in the app while its dark and you have kids with you, etc. I'm not sure what they were trying to accomplish.

Another stupid thing we have is a free annual Migratory Bird permit for doves and marsh hens. Even if you have lifetime licenses you have to go in every year and add the free item to your shopping cart and then pay a convenience fee for the transaction. Tickets get issued for this one. Kids that turn 12 need it all of a sudden too and they get ticketed for it as well. Dove fields and marsh hen tides are easy pickings for wardens.
Hip permits are a us federal law.
