I am headed to New Mexico in September on an archery Elk hunt. Am I going to want gaiters on this terrain? If so, which ones do you all recommend?

Leather chaps! HaHa.

I've never hunted NM actually, but I've hunted west Texas a bunch and the cactus can be brutal. Outfitters always use leather gaitors over there to keep from shredding their pants. I've worn my Sitka ones and the needles just blast right through them.

Northern New Mexico or Southern ? I used to live in Albuquerque, and FlyGuy has the right idea with leather (or other tough thorn proof material). I hunt in Chama (Northern NM), and the terrain and vegetation is a little more friendly. Mostly scrub oak and cedar.
I usually don't wear gaiters hunting near Chama unless there is snow on the ground. If I were hunting down around Albuquerque, I would consider some gaiters to protect legs and pants from thorns.

I use some thicker OR gaiters to keep out the rocks, dirt, burrs, and dry grasses. If you are wading through cactus then I think your doing something wrong!

Where in NM? The terrain in that state is so varied from north to south. That said, I've spent probably about 40 days in the field hunting elk in NM. I've worn gaiters maybe one or two days and that's it.

We are going to be in southern NM, near Roswell.

i havent been to Roswell in a long time.

i have spent a lot of time in Cloudcroft and Ruidoso. neither of those places would compel me to buy/bring Gaiters. Southern NM is super dry these days.
