I enjoy chasing Merriam’s around the Front Range every spring and have found enough spots to consistently fill 4 to 5 tags. A couple spots we can walk twenty yards from the truck and set up. Obviously, places like this do get more pressure and the birds get call shy as the season progresses. My favorite spot is five miles from the truck but I’ve never seen another hunter and the place is filled with uneducated turkeys. Am I the only one willing to hike five miles for a bird? How much time and effort do you typically put in during turkey season?

No if your a turkey hunter in colorado then your used to hiking if you want to be successful. I often backpack hunt for turkeys. Few and far between birds but fun.

Apparently my problem is hiking too far!! All this time they were at the truck!

I'd be happy to hike 5 miles if I knew what direction to go. Last year was my first year turkey hunting here in Colorado. I'm looking for some areas to hunt. Preferably somewhere within 2 hours of Denver. I found two jakes last year but I had to leave my house at 1AM to get to them while they were still on the roost. 2 Hr drive followed by a 2Hr hike. It was those two jakes along with 3 hens was all that I ever came across.

My wife decided last spring she wanted to kill a turkey. First ever hunt for her. We tried and failed, found lots of sign and other hunters haha. Have a better game plan for this year and a touch more knowledge. I'm not much of a bird hunter. Lol

I just go to wherever the birds are. If they are 100 yards from where I park or 5 miles. I have witnessed more than my fair share of Toms walking right by my parked truck while I am on the other end of the field. I have waded across chest deep water with wallet in mouth and gun above my head as ice chunks float by just because I saw a nice tom on the other side and I tell ya, the Cheyenne river in SD is not exactly narrow! In the end, it depends on how much land I have access to. Large tracts of land and I get happy feet but some of the smaller farms I hunt in MN I pretty much learned that happy feet just run everything off and prefer to sit in a blind and play the waiting game.
