I can put a slightly different perspective on this thread. A buddy of mines dad passed away at a young age from hanta virus. Pretty damn sad deal. It seems like we have a death every couple years in my county from it. I'm acutely aware of the dangers. That being said I think your misrepresenting the dangers the virus poses. Everything I've seen on it suggests that these exposures are occuring in concentrated areas of mouse activity like old barns(buddies dad) cabins old outhouses etc. Campers and hikers contract it in these locations not out on the landscape in their tents. Simply pitching a floor less shelter for the night in a random location is not a high risk activity.
I (long before covid) wear a n-95 mask to clean out my chicken coupe, demolish old sheds, clean out mouse infested seed storage sheds and other confined spaces. I supervise staff that is frequently in scenarios like this an it is standard operating procedure to mask up. I also spend many nights a year in a floor less shelter and plenty in a floored shelter as well. When choosing which to take on a trip Ive never even considered hantavirus.
I think its probably a good idea to know the dangers that hantavirus poses but I certainly wouldn't make it the reason you steer clear of a floorless shelter. Not to mention most of my floored tents are mesh on the inside and vent really well. I don't think they are providing much of a barrier to an aresolized virus. Also if you think a tent floor is 100% going to keep mice out your crazy ive seen them chew right through.
I agree with you. There are circumstances where one needs to take precautions for the nastiness those little buggers can spread.
The hilarity that he finds the need to warn some of the most bad ass hunters on the planet of this is what I have found so amusing and has made my Saturday!
Heaven forbid we concern ourselves with bears, cougars, wolves, rattlers, scorpions, water, lightning and treacherous terrain! Just to name a few things a tad more important.
Troll or not! This thread made my day!

The mere mention of this demonstrates how risk averse our society has become.
With so many recognized medical authorities nationwide such as the C.D.C., Mayo Clinic, Washington State Department of Health, New York State Department of Health, recognized disease experts at UCSF Medical Center, as well as countless others, in addition to government agencies such as the National Park Service warning campers who use floorless shelters of the increased risks of exposure to not only Hantavirus, but other diseases transmitted by mice as well, it's amazing that any rational sportsman would ignore such warnings. We're not risking $50 on the roll of the dice at a craps table in Las Vegas, or squandering $10 on lotto tickets. The critical loss of one's health , or life for that matter, is clearly good reason for any rational, responsible adult to take "risk averse" precaution. But It's different this time, it couldn't possibly happen to you in your floorless tent or shelter, now could it ? .....

WTF are you yammering about? Stop trolling.

Post a few actual official warnings specifically about floorless tents. Then pose statisticsl risk. Then someone may care. Probably not.

Hantavirus Hemorraghic Fever (HFRS) ... Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) ... Leptospirosis ... Lymphocytic Chloriomeningitis (LCMV) ... and there are others ...... Rodents, especially field mice urinate frequently. Mouse urine, as well as saliva, and feces dry, turn to dust, and become aerosolized spreading viruses, and bacteria through the air. These aerosolized diseases can be inhaled by humans causing serious illness, and death. A sewn in floor may add weight, bulk, and require cleaning but owning a floorless shelter can bring you in close contact with rodents that carry, and transmit diseases which can not only make you sick but can cause your death, as well as serious illness, and the death of friends, and family members who share your floorless shelter. Think four "4" times before you purchase a floorless shelter.....
Wtf? Rodents chew through tent floors and walls all the time. Mesh panels on tents don't block dust, so that kills your airborne particulate theory. Do you just sit around and watch A Thousand Ways to Die?

An average of seven cases of the Bubonic Plague occur annually in the US too. One third to one sixth of the Hantavirus cases. I’m not paralyzed by fear of the Plague either.

But approximately 700 people die of Hypothermia annually in the US.

According to the CDC, an estimated 476,000 cases of Lyme Disease occur each year.

Annually, there are approximately 4 deaths per 100,000 hikers caused by falls while mountain hiking.

Pick what you want to be paranoid about. Mitigate what risk you can however you choose.

I’m confident that my floorless shelter is less risk than that old cabin in WY

This post is so explicitly stupid I can't even come up with any seriously sarcastic comments... It just left me speechless... I bet he's got another account and is hoping a lightly used seek pops up at a bargain price. You eat more rat poop in any grain products You buy from a store then you are ever going to come in contact with on the ground outside.

Jesus. I better not drive a car anymore or go outside when there is a storm either. Or shoot my gun because there's lead inside the jackets and sometimes exposed at the tip.

My brother was in an episode and worked on the show. Most of it was made up. Hope I didn't burst anyone's bubble.

Ya, of all the things to worry about when sleeping on the ground this doesn't make the cut. That's coming from a guy who tent camps in an area with endemic plague.

Not surprised.

A buddy of mines brother was on that old A&E pest control show... whatever it was called... anyway he said the same of it - it was all staged. I seen one episode with him in it and there’s their family friend playing a customer with a snake in their basement. Dave said he planted the snake there and everything 😂😂😂

Don't forget to never, ever swim in any water that is not icy cold as you might get naegleria fowleri (aka the brain eating amoeba). With a mortality rate over 90% swimming is definitely too dangerous.

Also, the state of California says the material in your tent floor may cause cancer.

Just because I'm a history buff and feel like rambling, and the title of this threat justifies rambling by being sensationalist (a different title and approach would have certainly gotten a different response even if the thrust was the same).

Are you Hannibal after the movie cannibal or after the Carthaginian General? If after the General? Hannibal means Baal is gracious, keep in mind Baal is the god that required first born children be burned alive in sacrifice.

In a society that did not have last names, the family of Hannibal was so different that they where refered to as the Barcids. Which is why Hannibal is aften called Hannibal Barca. Barca means lightening and is a name that reflects who Hannibal the General was much better than the Carthaginian practice of naming males for something related to Baal.

I'm not bad ass enough for a handle like Barca and have to stick with Marbles both because I had a speech impediment into my 20's (marble mouth) and because I've lost my marbles. So, perhaps someone else can claim the lightening.

There is still a mouse in orbit from schitting on me when I was bivouacing on the PCT. little bastid kept climbing on my face when i was sleeping. I felt a little mouse steamer hit my neck and i lost it.

I'm kinda excited to see if i can PR on the next one.

Ive had some close calls in the woods, but now i can add, "i got real close to mouse poo."

I have never heard of a case of the virus being contracted in a portable shelter of any kind. Of the 3 cases on avg that occur in WA state each year, I have only personally heard of suspected sources of infection being while cleaning out mouse infested enclosed areas like cabins, houses, campers, travel trailers, etc. or possibly from driving a car around with mouse nests in the heating/vent system.

Based upon the above info and our inability to govern ourselves, I think governors should confiscate all seasonal homes and cabins, and also restrict automobile use in wooded areas where these tenacious, car trespassing, country mice most often live.

According to Commiefornia, everything causes cancer.
