This is an old dispersed shooting area that the FS built in to a proper range. The downside is that with the opening of this range they have now closed of sections of NF to public shooting.

"This range opening prompts the closing of 94,900 acres of unsuitable areas of
National Forest System lands identified in the 2019 Recreational Sport Shooting
Management Decision for public safety. The decision outlined geographic areas
where ranges needed to be built before closures could be implemented, ensuring
recreational shooting opportunities. These safety closures are in southern Clear
Creek, northern Larimer and Grand counties. The closure order and map can be
found on the forest website. You can find a full list of public target ranges on
Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s website."

I don't know any details so I can't comment on what is but... Growing up, we had a target range that sort of evolved near the city dump. Without places to hang targets, The local rod and gun club built benches but there was still a collection of appliances, beer cans, etc for targets that were left when the shooters were done.

If the range gets too formal or expensive, the garbage shooters just move to a new point of convenience. A couple years ago some evolved into shooting tv screens near my place. What a mess to clean up.

"Closed during the snow season."
"The Forest is proposing a fee at this site."
"You may encounter short-term closures a couple times a week while the site is being cleaned and maintained. Please respect all signage."
"...benches for 25, 50-75 and 100-yard shooting opportunities"

“Following years of collaboration, it is exciting for us and our partners to have the
first public shooting range opening and these safety closures being implemented,”
Forest Supervisor Chris Stubbs said. “We knew it was important to offer safe places
for displaced recreational shooters to go, while managing for public safety.”

The 2019 Decision to close unsuitable areas when shooting ranges were
constructed and open to the public came about through more than a decade of
collaboration
with the Northern Front Range Recreational Sport Shooting
Management Partnership. This partnership is made up of the U.S. Department of
Agriculture, Forest Service, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, and Boulder, Clear Creek,

Gilpin and Larimer counties. Additional closures in northern Clear Creek and Gilpin
counties are planned when the Clear Creek Shooting Sports Park opens in 2026.

It's been planned "for safety" since at least 2009.
Exactly how many "unsafe incidents" have occurred in the closed areas in the last
seventeen years?

Government. Always the worst option.

Yeah what a bait and switch… seriously, not sure how they will enforce it but man, the off limits shooting area is huge in comparison to a dinky ass little 100 yard range…

I woke up this morning and for the first time ever seriously considered that maybe Colorado is too far gone and it’s time to move on. The hits just keep coming.

This is the most boulder county thing ever… I’m sure that’s where this spawned from… they were pretty bummed that they couldn’t close public land from hunting which they unilaterally did a few years back

right? I’m gonna fight still this is home, but man it doesn’t feel like it much anymore. Also their zones are pretty much enforceable so there is that
