I guess this is the thing to do from reading some of the threads. New to the site but love what I’ve been seeing! Seems like a great group of guys!! I’ve been drowning myself in the endless amounts of information out here! I’ll post a brief one on here!!
I’ve always been interested in the outdoors and later teens I took up hunting since I didn’t have a father who was willing or able to “show me the way”.
After my first born I decided I wanted to take up a hobby/passion/way of life. At that time I didn’t realize all the positives that came along with it!
Living in South Dakota I started hunting predator and bird hunting along with some of the best fresh water fishing a guy could ask for.
After diving in head first I realized this was it for me and was time to dedicate myself fully.
I then began to pickup big game hunting out west along with my resident state as well. South Dakota has great elk herds but takes 14+ years to draw. So since my son was only 1 at the time decided I would pickup elk hunting OTC. The main reason is for the experience of being in the solitude (if your lucky enough to ditch the crowds) and if I did atleast one OTC Elk Hunt a year by the time I could hunt with my son or daughters I should have the hang of things!
Another reason would be this really gave me something to try and stay healthy and in shape for year round! This was great at first because I didn’t know what I was getting myself in to! Ended up losing 80 lbs and was physically up for the task but my first year didn’t dot he adequate research on area, fees, water all I cared about was getting into the nastiest shit I could to avoid people. This worked perfectly ended up hiking 83 miles in 7 days and didn’t see another soul the whole time and I became obsessed! My downfall I never seen, heard, or smelled a cow! This last year was my second go round and really learned a lot and was actually in elk every day and my biggest mistake was hiking past elk to get to more elk!!
On to areas I’ve been hunting CO and after seeing how many people wanted to take the easy way out or in and over and over and over again the same questions get asked in different ways....where do I hunt! I realized that is the fun part is to prepare all year round and out the boots on the ground. ALL of the information is out there you just gotta get after it!!! Still a newb and yet to seal the deal but am addicted and cannot wait for 2019!!
My biggest struggle right now is after being out there two years in a row I know what to expect and have let my body go for some time and going into a new area no matter how rugged I hear It is there I can’t make my mind stfu and get after it’s more of the same ah you’ll be alright just start this summer!! Some how need to find the motivation again to straight kill it!! Hope all of your off-seasons are going good!
