This may have been discussed at length before but I cannot find a thread on it. I’m flying out to Colorado from Michigan next month to work with Tom Sr. at RMSG and to attend at least day of the Compton Big Game Classic. I’m bringing a two-piece 58” Toelke Whistler with me but I’ve never flown with trad gear.

I’m looking at a hard case from Far North to travel with. Does anyone have experience with this type of case? I’m only traveling over a three day period and I know I have to check the case at check-in.

How do you guys pack your stuff and what’s your horror stories?

I use a soft padded takedown case, with fleece sleeves . I then place the bow in a duffle with clothing or soft items around it.
I haven’t had an issue.
I find arrows to be more of a pita to pack.
Again , Hard arrow case in a duffle.
I used a wheeled snowboard case once , that was annoying as everything taco’d to the bottom . No horror stories

I fly with surfboards annually. Pool noodles , cut in half; are great insurance for any hard items , taped with clean removal duct tape - which makes a serviceable repair tape.

I have used the Far North case multiple times to fly from Oregon to Michigan every year for the
CTB Rendezvous. I’ve also flown to AK 3 times using these cases. That’s why I have partnered with them and offer them on my website.

Ive done a three piece take down in a soft case and arrows in a tube, all thrown in a duffel or Kuiu Waypoint bag. Never had an issue as checked luggage. I've also done a small takedown Shotgun hard case, with clothes packed around the bow. The only issue with the second is that it always gets flagged as a gun and you have to pick it up in a secure location.

On a side note, I see several folks mentioning Comptons in this thread. Glad to see fellow members here. I'm a board member for the organization. If you're at The Big Game Classic or Rendezvous, come up and introduce yourself. I'm Chris Jasmine. Cheers!

Are you checking the case by itself or putting it inside another piece of luggage?

We actually met this past summer at the rendezvous. I was in Tom’s morning seminar. I’ll be sure to stop by on Friday and say hello!

Wrap the limbs to a hard arrow case and put it in a hard side suitcase. If that gets broken, they probably will have a hard time identifying the crash victims.

I’ve done it both ways. Just depends on what I am doing and how much gear I am taking.
I also use the case to pack my bow on long road trips. I can toss it in the back of the truck worry free.

Heck yeah. I assume you are one of the 15 that signed up for his Thursday evening deal. I just signed up myself. Glad you started this thread because I am in the same boat as you on flying with a bow.

I have a Far North case I've used with a 66" longbow. It's a great case and very sturdy. However, I did have a bad experience on a return trip with Air Canada. The case somehow got pinched and it broke my arrows and damaged my bow. I don't know if it was driven over or got caught in a conveyer belt, but it would take tremendous force to bend that case. Stay away from Air Canada and I think you'll be fine.

I just flew down to work with tom and brought my two piece whip. I put it in a td arrow sock and put it and a half a dozen arrows in a thick cardboard tube and sealed the ends with tape. I put the tube in a dry bag with my td recurve case and some extra clothes for padding.

I’ve flown with the cardboard tube a number of times and it’s plenty rigid and sturdy as long as it doesn’t get wet if you’re looking for a cheaper option. Thick pvc could work too.
