Good evening,
Normally I’d fly with a dedicated hard gun case, but really don’t want to juggle extra bags. Does anyone seeing this being an issue. I’d obviously fill up more of the dead space, but if I could check just this and carry on my pack with optics it would make life a lot easier on the return trip

You're doing it the only way I know. Remove the foam from case, load up your clothing and accessories, and then insert the guns. Never had an issue, including international travel recently to Scotland where British Airways specifically says to avoid having clothing in the gun case.

Be careful with Delta however, they have a policy that only the gun and “gun related items” be in your gun case. On more than one occasion, I have been forced to remove clothing and boots for them to check the firearm.

I must be old school as I still use foam inserts to lock my gun in place for airline travel. I've seen them drop my gun case off the belt leading up to the cargo hold and throw it on the baggage tractor over the years. I have massive gouges on my pelican case and who knows how that happened during transit. I even had to replace a heavy duty padlock in Canada on a trip due to case damage. All this abuse and not once has my gun been off zero....

I'll take the peace of mind over luggage convience everytime. Fly business class and have luggage weight to 70 lbs. If you can't fit everything in an exepedtion rolling duffel, then you're probably packing too much!

Just got back from Alaska. Did exactly this, no issues. Main thing is gun unloaded and no loose ammo.
