I have a quick flight question. My daughter drew a youth tag in AZ. I’ll drive out and she’ll fly with my father in-law. Is there such a thing as a round trip ticket where the return flight could be canceled last minute? If her hunt lasts close to the full week, the return flight will work fine. If she’s lucky and fills her tag early, we’d like to cancel the return flight and they’ll ride home with me.

Not one leg of a round trip that I am aware of, but I don’t think you really care. United, at least, offers fully refundable tickets (at a higher cost of course) but it applies to the round trip. Buy the refundable ticket, fly out, and if not needed cancel the return for a partial refund.

Thanks guys. That’s what I wanted to know. The other option would be a one way, then book a one way return whenever we get done hunting. Anyone have any experience booking flights last minute? Seems like it could be a gamble, but they can always ride home with me if there’s nothing available.

Frequent flyer mile flights are much easier to change or cancel.
Sign up for a credit card to get a bunch of miles to start.
Book them as one way.

Buy a one way there and then a refundable one way for the return flight. I think you'd have a tough time getting a refund on the return of a round trip ticket.

Yup, like stated buy a one way there and one way refundable coming back. If anyone has miles, you can typically cancel the return of a round trip and get that portion of your miles back. If she travels often, you can save and not get the refundable one way back, just a class that allows trip credit, would be cheaper.

As long as your the airport you are flying to is decent sized, you probably won’t have a major problem getting a last minute flight. Might have to be at the airport though. Cost is one of the biggest differences. Tickets generally double to triple for last minute stuff.
