FL Chamberlin or SG Grumman Jacket

I'm looking for a warmer jacket to put in my pack for cold mornings glassing. It would admittedly spend most of it's time in the pack but I need something warmer than my Uncompahgre for early morning glassing. What do ya'll have to say?

I am also open to other jackets that could compete with these. Shoot away.

The Chamberlin and Grumman are not comparable. The FL has twice the insulation that the SG does.

I think the gruman is comparable to the brooks. For your purpose I’d use the chamberlain or Sitka kelvin down.

The Chamberlin is the warmest puffy I’ve ever had. The closest comparison is the Kifaru LPP. The Chamberlin is definitely warmer than the Sitka Kelvin down hoody IMO.

For another comparison, I thought the Uncompahgre puffy was warmer than the Kelvin too.

That's strange. I have an Uncompahgre and that thing is literally warmer than nothing. I'm not sure if I got a bad unit with very little fill but the thing is just loosey goosey sloppy. Literally has no loft. I'm even considering mountaineering brands like Rab and Arcteryx in order to find a good, warm and packable puffy.

It’s hard (impossible) to do with synthetics but a rough estimate of warmth is fill weight (not item weight) * fill power. There are other factors like windproofness and baffle construction but it’s a good way to compare two puffies

To compare you need to look at fill power and fill weight, which is what Form was saying as well.

The brooks has a touch over 3.5 ounces of 800 fill power down (37.5 treated I think) - the stone glacier is 5.3 ounces, and is significantly warmer than others I’ve owned and used like the uncompahgre, Kuiu super down, etc.

I think that Sitka down windstopper puffy is probably one of the closer jackets, as well as the Kuiu superdown pro.

I would also consider the face fabric and your use - all of them are different.

I couldn't agree more. I sold the Uncompahgre because I didn't feel like it was very warm...especially for its weight.

I've heard we will have some color options in the future on the SG coat.

I agree the two jackets in question are really different classes. The SG jacket is most similar to the KUIU Super Down Pro. The Pro has 5 oz. of 850 fill. The SG is 5.3 oz of 850. The Pro weighs 13.4 oz, the SG weighs 11.8. The Pro has a more durable shell.

The Sitka Kelvin WS is a better comparison to the Chamberlain. The Chamberlain is one of the warmer puffy's I've tried followed by the Sitka Kelvin WS. And with good reason, they are the one's with the most fill. With more fill, you're going to get a heavier jacket. That's why the KUIU Ultra SD weights in at 7 oz. It only has 2.3 oz of fill. (and a super lightweight shell), while the Chamberlain and Sitka WS are North of 25 oz.

I've owned/tested about every hunting puffy made. I use several different ones depending on the climate I'm going to be in and how "packable" I need to be. For all out protection against the worst elements, I like the Sitka Kelvin WS.
For early season sheep it is tough to beat the KUIU Ultra's but this year I'm checking out the First Lite Brooks. For a damp climate such as Kodiak, I like the Kelvin Lite, Regular Kelvin, the WS or the Kifaru Lost Parka.

If I could only own TWO puffy's, (one for early season, one for late) they would be the FL Brooks and the Sitka Kelvin WS.

The Brooks isn't even close to the Grumman. the brooks is 100grams of down blend whereas the grumman is 850 fill of 150grams of down insulation. Gonna be way warmer than the brooks

This should give everyone a good idea. Chamberlin - Grumman - Brooks

What are you thoughts on the brooks vs the Grumman? Noise of fabric, what one feels more durable, and does the Grumman seem substantially warmer?

I’d say the Grumman is a bit quieter, much warmer, but not quite as durable as the Brooks. I wouldn’t want to wear either walking through brush. I bought the Grumman for sitting and glassing so it should serve me just fine. The Grumman, as you can see in the pics, is considerably loftier. It also packs down super tight and comes with a perfectly sized stuff sack. They both compact down to around the same size.
