First trip with the newly finished tarp

Thanks. Tim was super helpful couldn't have done it without his help. I'll be using better more expensive material next round now that I've got a bit of experience and built a little confidence.

Live2hunt,

What did you use for material? I'm working on my tarp now and found some really good silnylon from www.ripstopbytheroll.com. It's 20d but has a higher tear strength and hydrostatic rating than any other silnylon I've found. I hope mine turns out as good as the ones already posted here. I'm adding a built in annex on mine, so we'll see how that works.

This time I just used some Walmart clearance $1/yrd ripstop next time I'm probably gonna silnylon. I considered cuben but I'll be at almost $300 just for material so maybe down the road when I've got that to blow. Cuben would bring the weight to right at a pound I think.

The tarp looks good man nice job!

I did play with some cuben fiber materials and the tape/glued seams but didn't really like the way it was gonna work out on this style of tarp since it didn't seem like it wanted to stretch and pull as tight as the silnylon. I did find another material that I might play with one of these days i i can get ahold of some. it is a type of parasail cloth that is lighter than 1.35 oz silnylon and about twice the strength... I will post up something about it if it works out.

However I did find a particularly nasty hang gliding forum thread which tore a guy a new one and told him quit asking stupid new guy questions for asking about waterproof fabrics for flying in the rain. I think I'll stick to back country hunting, you guys are way nicer and put up with all the stupid questions I want to ask. :)

The best thing is that we have all asked those same questions and there is always someone on here that probably knows the answer...

Tim,

Did you have to do anything special while sewing the hypalon patches? I found a few different hypalon patches that are about 1/8" thick. Is that too thick, or not thick enough?

you know, the patches that i used were about 1/16" thick (almost the same as is on the top of a timberline bag from Kifaru) so all I did was pub them in place and sew... I did use a slightly heavier needle though, a denim one if I remember.

That stuff won't be nearly as waterproof a regular ripstop silnylon. The hydrostatic head is a rating that's used to define the level of waterproofness. At 2psi it will have a rating of about 1,400mm. That's decent, but I wouldn't use anything less than 1,800mm.
