First Muzzleloader Decision

Hell, I’ve had to use several hundred patches to get a used muzzy clean before. That one is clean. 😉

I agree with ElD. Those patches look great for a secondhand muzzleloader. After you shoot it, your patches will be much dirtier! Don’t be alarmed. Do make sure your bore is dry before loading. (Run a couple dry patches and or snap off a couple primers before loading).

Over the past few weeks I've added a few "upgrades" to my Omega in the way of a williams "Ace in the hole" rail/peep and western precision front globe w/ the .019 fiber optic insert.

Then I finally got to do some shooting this weekend. I got it mostly dialed in using 80-85gr of 777 and the 350gr bor-locks. It would seem the QLA was drilled straight on my example (no key holes!) avoiding the need for sub bases or a barrel chop. I think I found out the hard way that Williams wasn't kidding when the recommended a "western precision" specific rear rail to go with the front globe as I quickly used up the available elevation adjustment on mine and my POI is still low of POA.

I also sized my bore with the Thor bullet sizing kit. I found the .501 bullet to work nicely with my bore and even smacked my 8" steel plate at 100 yards with the sample bullet which seemed to shoot flatter. I then discovered the sample bullets provided are of the 247 grain flavor so I ordered 15 of those and 15 of the 297 grainers as well. Once those arrive I will play around with some more aggressive powder charges to see if I can get the heavier bullets up closer to POA, no matter what I will have a setup I'm confident in hunting with. Overall I'm very pleased with the performance of my Omega, bring on September 13th!

If you need a taller rear, you could call Williams and ask about a replacement (taller) rear sight (they are good to deal with) or try one of these.

Definitely shoot a group with each of the Thors to see how your rifle likes them. My Omega stacks them into groups like a centerfire rifle, and the terminal performance is the best in the game.
