I was 23 when I first read Robby’s book, I remember when I finished it I was in the hospitals waiting room for my wife’s surgery when they had to remove her thyroid due to cancer. We were only married 3 months before we found out she had lymphoma and thyroid cancer. I remember I sat there in the waiting room dreaming of big bucks only thinking it was so far away to obtain. We were broke with thousands of dollars in medical bills while I was working two jobs to keep our heads above water.
That was 8 years ago and a lot has changed since then. With a lot of hard work, a loving family and the grace of god she has since beat cancer, blessed me with an amazing little boy and I’ve been able to pursue mule deer seriously these last few years. I’ve come close to killing a mature buck but was never able to seal the deal till this week. I drew a Colorado 3rd season tag and came out here ready to put all the skills I’ve read and learned to the test expecting to grind it out.
On the way to our morning spot we found this buck off the road in a section of public land surrounded by private property. I was able to get out quick and shoot him before he got into the cover, the hot doe in the open kept his attention just long enough to dump him in one shot.
It’s ironic in a way, with all the miles hiked, cameras set and time in the backcountry and I kill my biggest buck couple hundred yards off the road that took virtually no skills to do so. He’s definitely not the biggest compared to all the big bucks on here, he’s 160 at best maybe. Score doesn’t matter to me on this buck though It represents everything me and my amazing wife have overcome these last 8 years. I was able to FaceTime my wife and little boy and share the experience with them.
On a side note he had a collar on that I didn’t see until I walked up to him, his neck was so big and thick it hid the collar well. The biologist has it now and told me she could maybe give me some idea if he was a local buck or if he migrated into this area during the rut. Also planning on pulling a tooth for age analysis.
