I was able to watch the bear through a spotter for several minutes. What a beast! I typically carry bear spray and a short barreled shotgun if I am fishing or hiking and not hunting.

After seeing that critter though I am thinking of switching my shotgun for an over and under flamethrower/howitzer.

Good news for us humans though is this was a vegan bear. He must have eaten 20 pounds of alfalfa while I watched. Alfalfa is even easier to catch then me.

As a backup plan I was going to hit my buddy in the knee cap and run if the bear came in our direction.

They are pretty impressive to see and watch in a natural environment.

Saw one throwing 200# + rocks down a slide looking for marmots like they were pebbles. No way on meeting one up close.

Congratulation, nothing like it. For most of my clients it wasn’t the fish they talked about it was their first encounter with a grizz that occupied their stories. Nothing like spending the day with apex predators close at hand. I hope you get the chance to see many more

I've explained this many times to Flat Landers.....there's a million threads from east coast hunters about "Bear Protection" and pages of load data and 454 vs 500SW.

The young sub 2 year cubs and sows are sooooo much different than breeder boars. The collared and tagged boars I see on camera are double the size of the sows. Simply Shit yer pants impressive.

So 500 SW chat threads may be relevant to sows and cubs.....but the big old boars.....that's the Flame Thrower/Howitzer class.

I can't imagine the AK Coastal boars.

On my one Brown Bear Hunt, I got the dry mouth BAD while trying to catch up to one.
Never had that happen before. Seemed unnatural to be moving towards one of those
monsters. Thing was the size of a horse.
Never got a shot in 10 days.

I rounded a corner in a trail once at the same time the biggest grizz I've seen in MT rounded the other corner ahead of me, less than 30 yds, on a hiking trail across a steep, timbered slope. That bear's head looked as wide as my chest. I was sheep hunting in SEP and distinctly remember two thoughts in this order.

1. That's the most beautiful bear I've ever seen.

2. I wish i was carrying something bigger than my .30-06.

I told that grizz it was time to leave and I was relieved when it turned around and obliged.

I then sat down for about 15 minutes and hung out when i realized it went back around a blind corner.

I can't carry a tune in a bucket, but as I walked back down that trail for quite some time I belted out every word I could recall of Amazing Grace, and probably some that never were written. In addition I thanked the Lord for His protection.

They aren't something to fear and they aren't hiding behind every tree to chew on you, but they are definately an apex predator to respect. And beautiful to boot, in their own way.

This thread makes me appreciate hunting in Alabama. The most dangerous animals we have are ticks, snakes, mosquitoes, and pigs. I would like to hunt in some grizzly country some day but I’d like to go with someone who has experience with the beautiful terrifying beast.
