I am going on my first elk hunt this year. I have decided to take my custom 6.5 prc - 20 inch barrel 1:7.5 twist. Any advice on factory bullet selection? I have three boxes of accubond 142 lr but I’ve always loved Barnes as well. I’m a little hesitant to take the 6.5 as I also have a 30/06 but from what I’ve gathered the prc will do the job. Curious what suggestions you could offer? Thanks - Tim

It will definitely do the job. What is your anticipated range? The lrx will need more velocity to open so not as good for longer ranges. A lot of people like more fragmenting bullets and they seem to work well also. Nothong wrong with those either. Personally I would take what shoots best out of my gun.

Thanks. I can’t imagine taking a shot past 400 so I would assume velocity will be fine at that range for the lrx to do what it needs to. That was one reason I was leaning towards the accubond lr since it will/should perform at lower velocities.

You will get a lot of recommendations for 140/147 grain ELDms and 143 grain ELDx. And of course the elusive 130 grain TMK.

127 LRX is by most accounts the best easily available nonlead option. Should work great if over 2000 FPS at impact. The ELDm/x will work to 1800fps at impact reliably.

Read the 6.5/.260 thread for great discussion of bullet options.

prc will do the job fine. If the 142 shoots well out of your gun I would run it. Im sure if you keep ranges reasonable either bullet will do fine, best of luck.

Either one will kill; shoot the most accurate one for your rifle.

I’ve killed a many critters with the barns 127 out of my 6.5x284, elk, deer, a moose. From 20 yards to 600. They die fast. I’d follow above advice and shoot what you’re most confident and shoot often. Then when you think you’re good shoot another few dozen rounds. Then shoot some more from various positions and conditions. Always adhere to your limits and get as close as you can.

127LRX hands down for me.
The LRX is simply the best hunting bullet made currently for "sane" distances IMHO.

My family has put several elk in the freezer with the 127 lrx from 260 ackley and 264 winmag including mature bulls past 500. Put the lrx through the shoulders and they will not go far. Meat damage has been extremely minimal. We have literally slow cooked whole bone in antelope shoulders with a 1"-2" square cut out.

I can't speak for the accubond but highly recommend the lrx.

I had a 6.5 PRC. Was thinking it might be too small for elk. Had a couple therapy sessions with Avery and now I have a 6 UM. Went down the Rokslide rabbit hole and bought the kid a 16.5" 22 Creed barrel for her Sig Cross. With every intent of her shooting elk with it. (No caliber restrictions in Montana).
There's a lot of success using match style bullets going really fast to kill even the biggest western game.

With my PRC I really liked the 156 Bergers. Never had a chance to use the 147 eldms. But I'd rock the eldms before a mono or bonded.

I've had a lot of deer run off after being hit wit a high velocity accubond because they didn't cause enough tissue damage. Zip through the lungs and the deer would go on long death runs. Might have even lost my biggest buck because of this.

The 143 eldx wasn't bad either. Lots of dead deer. Big wounds.
