I am going on my first elk hunt this year. I have decided to take my custom 6.5 prc - 20 inch barrel 1:7.5 twist. Any advice on factory bullet selection? I have three boxes of accubond 142 lr but I’ve always loved Barnes as well. I’m a little hesitant to take the 6.5 as I also have a 30/06 but from what I’ve gathered the prc will do the job. Curious what suggestions you could offer? Thanks - Tim

It will definitely do the job. What is your anticipated range? The lrx will need more velocity to open so not as good for longer ranges. A lot of people like more fragmenting bullets and they seem to work well also. Nothong wrong with those either. Personally I would take what shoots best out of my gun.

Thanks. I can’t imagine taking a shot past 400 so I would assume velocity will be fine at that range for the lrx to do what it needs to. That was one reason I was leaning towards the accubond lr since it will/should perform at lower velocities.

You will get a lot of recommendations for 140/147 grain ELDms and 143 grain ELDx. And of course the elusive 130 grain TMK.

127 LRX is by most accounts the best easily available nonlead option. Should work great if over 2000 FPS at impact. The ELDm/x will work to 1800fps at impact reliably.

Read the 6.5/.260 thread for great discussion of bullet options.
