I recently bought a pair of K2 Splitboard boots (backcountry snowboarding) and they came with these starter paracord shoelaces as backup laces, which I thought was a little weird, but probably a sample of an offering somewhere in the K2 brand chain. There’s a little plate that you lace into your boot and the tips of the cord are strikers. My immediate reaction is that it pretty hokey, then again, it’s not a terrible backup for your backup’s backup idea.

I went through a “survival” phase when I was in the army. I replaced my boot laces with 550 and put a small fire starter, razor blades, half a hacksaw blade and a handcuff key in my boots under then insole.

Apart from the blades getting really rusty, the 550 got shredded by a few thorn patches and I went back to regular laces.

I guess it can’t hurt but I would have to be pretty bad off to rely on this stuff.

The last thing I would want to do is take my boots off in a survival situation and burn my shoe laces, which then limits my ability to walk out. It seems like more of a marketing ploy than anything but I always have a couple of ways to start a fire with me regardless. I would probably swich the laces out for regular boots laces and maybe use what came with the boots for some type of lanyard.

It doesn't seem very practical, but I guess if it was your last resort it would be nice to have.

Probably a much better idea for normal EDC where you could need fire but not need to walk out. But those are going to be extremely rare situations and not one I'd be worried about personally...

I would maybe consider it if I could cut to length, extra long laces or buy longer than my boots needed .Then I could cut the extra off and still have enough lace to keep boots tight and functional

Just take the laces and wrap them around water bottle...you got back up and you dont have to worry about no having boots.
