Finally, some jail time.

I bet this will send a message to the rest of them.
The message is, if you’re going to poach don’t simply poach for the kill or because you want the antlers or meat.
Do so in a manner you can monetize the process and kill through social media, YouTube, instagram and leverage the kills for sponsorships.
That way you have extra money to drag the case out and negotiate a plea, can get mercy from the court because the hunting industry is your livelihood, and have legion of other influencers and followers that will defend you and tell everyone “you’re really a good guy”.

Thats it.

As felons now they can’t even carry a gun so if they get stopped and checked for any reason they are done for. At least now they can’t make it look like they’re legally hunting under any circumstances. Hopefully people in that area will keep an eye out for them in the field. If they have probation I think it’s legal for law enforcement to check in on them, watch their cell data, etc

Crazy how many big poaching cases have come up in Idaho the last couple years. Either we’re the poaching capitol of the West or our F&G are really good …
Are they actually felons? I think they may have been sentenced for multiple misdemeanors.

Kudos to law enforcement who picked them up and put together the case. Kudos to judge for what he handed down

We can debate the rest.....but this case, on its merits- and not comparing to other wildlife crime cases, -seems to be as good a result the public could ask for

"Behind a thin green line"....it's a good read

Agreed, but Karl Studer is a multimillionaire so he’s got that going for him with the criminal justice system.

Studer took how many elk and a moose out of unit 54 and got no jail time and only 5 years lost hunting privileges if I remember correctly? Not that I find any less value in mule deer personally but if they are going to use the draw odds for the place to justify the punishment most of unit 54 elk tags are 2-3% and a moose tag is less than 1% odds down there so Studer should probably be serving a life sentence

"At a sentencing hearing Monday morning, the judge ordered Studer to pay $180,344 in fines and court fees and serve five years of unsupervised probation along with 50 hours of community service, 25 of which must be dedicated to “wildlife preservation and/or conservation.”
Studer has also been banned from hunting in Idaho ever again, which, thanks to the Interstate Wildlife Violator Compact, bans him from obtaining a hunting license in most other states as well."
