Federal 6.5 Backcountry?

It’s going to be 6.5 creedmoor using the peak alloy cases. So essentially what some these niche companies are doing but from federal.

I would guess 308 is also coming.

Lots of things coming in new barrel tech and cases. If this holds, there won’t be a need for a 6.5 PRC. But just speculation of course.
A 308 would be perfect!

I mean, do you need the extra 200 or so yards this buys over standard 6.5cm? That's all it does. With the associated increase in recoil. I would venture to say an 11 year old doesn't.
It has zero to do with an 12 year old shooting an extra 200 yards.

It has everything to do with a 6.5CM being in inappropriate for elk hunting until now.

12 year olds don’t always make perfectly placed shots their first time. The +Peak in a 155gr is 30-06 territory with a rifle they can practice with and not build bad habits.

A kid will always be more comfortable in a hunting situation with the exact rifle they have practiced with.

Energy....more energy.

If a bunch of midwesterner's want to continue coming out here and wounding our elk with their need more's...I guess that is their choice.
That's interesting. So, if you had to put a max range to it, what do you think is the maximum range you'd use this +Peak 6.5CM on elk?

Regular 6.5CM with a 155gr has energy of 1800 out to just past 100 yards. The plus peak has 1800 to 300 yards.

Those would be max distances for shooting at an elk by anyone not considered an expert marksman.

Killed a bull last fall at 420 with the needmore. Went about 8 steps and took a nosedive.

But I'm far from an expert, shoot factory even. Guess I need to dust off the ol 7rem again.

Weird. Seems like they die when I shoot regular 6.5cm into their vitals. There probably aren't any pictures on here either...

That would likely be for the best if you are taking 400+ yard shots on elk. None of this even considered the discussion of expanded diameter and the inherent weaknesses of a 6.5mm projectile.

People like LongWayAround an d PredatoronthePrairie are why this new ammo is so exciting. Saves the elk from some of them.

Not sure about a 155gr but a 143gr is over 1800 ft/lbs out to 200-250 depending on muzzle velocity. But why are you using 1800 ft/lbs as a threshold anyway? Even people who think bullets work based off of energy normally say 1500 ft/lbs for elk. What made you settle on 1800?

Margin of error for a young shooter. The whole discussion was initially based on a 12 year old...and the 6.5Creedmore bunnies turned it into something about them...as adults, who have hunted for years and probably killed several big game animals.
