Favorite non-magnum elk gun?

I’ve seen a lot of elk die to a .270. I can say with A sample size of around 30, that the elk do not know the difference between it and an ’06.
Currently I’d put the ammo availability for it right up there with .308. Pretty much any factory ammo you want to shoot is available. Ballistically, probably only the .280ai beats it out of your choices in the poll.

They all fit the criteria well, I wouldn’t hesitate, feel under gunned, or think twice about any of them… the projectile choice would be a more weighed decision than the cartridge choice out of those… personally, I would go with the 270, but I have seen them all make short work of elk besides the 280ai, which is obviously a solid cartridge, I just have not watched elk die to them… the rest I have, and I have seen the lowest energy cartridge listed blow up heavy bone on a Roosevelt bull.

If I were shooting factory ammo, the 308 would be my choice due to availability even during ammo shortages, and factory ammo is cheaper than the rest… I just bought one with that being a big factor even though I plan to mostly reload… I have been paying 42$ a box for terminal ascent, which is tough to beat for anything I do… same ammo for our creed is close to 60$

I've got a bunch of .308 brass and dies if you need anything. No plans on my end for another .308 anytime soon

7 SAUM/280 ai
I was excited for the 7 PRC but 7 LRM seems to already fit that niche and not interested in a long action. 6.5 PRC has plenty of grunt for elk but the 7 just does it better.

I agree with Laramie. There is plenty of ammo to be had if you work for it. I just bought a bunch of 300 PRC, and about an hour ago I found a ton of 6.5 PRC ELDM and ELDX in stock. Prices are tolerable all things considered.
